There are really no bad model years that you need to avoid. 1987's were the first model year and have an electrical system that is unique to that single year. Years 1988 -2000 are virtually identical with the exception of colors and graphics. Beginning with year 2001, Yamaha took away the kickstarter and replaced the front drum brake with a disc brake.

Some people think after '87 the TW went down hill.

2006 & 2007 seem to be the most susceptible to a leaking base gasket. It wouldn't really be a deal breaker for me if I found a good deal, but it is worth noting.

Thank you , Kind of like KLR's How big of a pain is it to R&R a base gasket? That is one of the years I was considering..I'm looking at a 06 for $ 2600 and a 2012 for $ 3100, 06 has 1200 miles, 2012 has 3000 miles, May I ask for your opinions ?

Base gasket is no big deal if you have a little bit of mechanical aptitude and some tools. If you can find a TW with a leaking base gasket use that to hammer the seller down on the price. As for you choices, if it were me I would choose the less expensive one with the lower mileage. However, realize that 5 or 10 years from now the mileage difference and cost difference will be insignificant. Offer the guy with the '12 $2K and see what he says. You might get lucky.
