My 2003 TW was recently stolen (the subject of another post) and the bike was recovered a couple of weeks later--left abandoned by the thugs that stole it. The vin # had been scratched off and the ignition module drilled out. No other noticeable damage though I didn't get to start it up. My insurance company is calling it a total loss and saying the bike is worth $1600. Not easy to find a clean low mileage TW for that price (at least not around here). I told them to look on the interweb/craigslist/autotrader etc etc. and they will find most of them are listed for over $2k. Am I way off base here? Anyway, they claim they are only able to look at bikes for sale by dealers. They found no bikes for sale by dealers so called a couple of local dealers (who carry yamaha but don't stock TWs) and asked them for quotes--i.e. how much would you sell a 2003 TW. That's where they got $1600. I told them that was too low. They said if I find a 2003 TW 200 listed with a dealer anywhere in the country (that they can verify) they will consider that price as well. So, If your local shop happens to have a such a bike for sale, would you please let me know? It would be very helpful b/c the insurance company is being a real pain about this.

I shopped around for a while and paid a decent bit more than $1600 for the bike only 6 months ago so I think at least for the market around here the price is low. If you think their price is fair, would be helpful to know that too. Many thanks!

Insurance companies are in business to make money. They can't make money by paying claims honestly. Always reject a first offer. It's how the game is played.

Sorethumb, many thanks for finding that quote. This is great example of how the forum has really added value to its members. It really made a difference in my insurance settlement.

Here is the relevant excerpt from an email I got from the Insurance company. They were originally offering me $1600. Sorethumb, I will PM you for your address as I want to send you something to thank you(not sure if I can send a gallon of crown in the mail, but I'll figure something out!)

I hoped you used Vaseline before you reamed the insurance company. I paid $1800 for my 2003, in perfect condition except a missing mirror, 712 miles, new battery, 5 years ago.

You don't need to send me anything. I didn't do it because I was hoping to gain anything. That's just how things are done around here and if I were in your shoes I would hope to receive the same kind of help.

I am glad that it worked to your advantage. I'll happily accept the Karma deposit for helping out.
