    Tampering with the speedometer

I posted a while ago about dentists sometimes being "factually challenged". Well here's another example of a shark attack.

Last week there was an ad locally here on Craigslist for a TW200.. It was being sold from a local business that re-sells motorcycles and ATV's. I think it was a late 90's model if I remember right (it did have a kick start on it). They wanted $2,300.00 for the bike. The Ad said the bike only had about 350 miles on it. The ad showed a picture of the speedometer with the stated mileage. I'm not in the market for another bike but I was driving by and stopped in to take a look anyway. As it turns out, the bike had just sold. But here's the deal; It should have been clear to anyone with eye's in their head that the only thing on that bike with 350 miles was the speedometer. The bike itself clearly had many thousands of miles on it (mine has 15,000. and it looks less used then this TW did). The tires were worn out, and based on wear marks all over the frame and engine, I think that set of tires might not have been the first set that came with the machine.

This got me wondering just how much effort it takes to disable or replace the speedometer on the TW200?

The mileage was one of those "alternate facts" we hear about in politics these days. All one has to claim is that "odometer reads only 350 miles" and the average consumer will hear "bike has only 350 miles". Everyone should take RDW shopping with them due to her sharp eye for detail.
Used speedo's can be purchased, some already may be pre-rolled back.1987 Yamaha Trailway Tw200 Speedometer Gauges 675 Mi Tw 200

Someone can just buy a new speedo from any Yamaha dealer - O miles.

When I worked for Victory Motorcycles, a dealer would needed to fill out an "official" mileage form when replacing a speedo and send it in with the old / broken speedo. Other than that, no one tracks the mileage except for the title transfers.

If you have the TW VIN #, you can call Yamaha and check the registration / warranty history to see if mileage was recorded in the Yamaha system.

Disabling is easy, just unhook the cable, but I would want to know every mile I've went though, bragging rights on the forum!

Umm, fred... that would be "his" sharp eye.

And no, it should have been obvious to anyone

people crack me up. I take great care to make sure all miles get recorded. I earned every one of them and sit here to tell about it. My tw will hit 20k this year in moab and im excited about it. I have no intention to try and roll back miles on anything I own. At 20k its in better shape than most with a few thousand. Not because I baby it, but because I maintain it very well.

Yep! I love saying "32,000 trouble free fun miles". (Actually more than 32K but I am to lazy and it is to cold to go look.)

More than 30K on the chain and the front sprocket is nearly worn out. I could replace the sprocket..........but I am not sure it is worth the effort without replacing the chain too.
Long live the internal combustion engine!
