I have a 2006 Tw, I put a small RPM meter on my bike, Just wanted to see how high it is running, this is what I found, The bike has stock sprockets and chain-- at 40 mph the rpm is 3300 at 65 mph it is 4400 RPM. The idle speed shows 1400. The bike runs good. I saw some on some post that the tw will run at 9000 rpm, I think that it will blow up at that type rpm. I hope that this info will help someone out. ( just did a oil change, put in a full synthetic 10w 40 oil ,the bike shifts much better now, sounds better too --- )

Your tach is off by at least double the rpm. Better have a look at the settings.

With stock gearing and a new stock rear tire the TW turns in excess of 7600rpm at 60.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Powdercoated '87 frame, extended swingarm, YZ fork legs, ATV tire, 14/55, XT350 tank, spliced quick-release seat, disc brake conversion, beeg headlight, beeger rack, Lizrdcooler, Lizrdventz and bunch of other stuff all covered in invisible ink.

But 1400 is a normal idle.

The TW200 has a wasted spark system, so if your meter uses the spark to gauge RPM, you might need to adjust for that.

I will look at the box and see that it is set wright. I think that it a cheep unit, I think that I can use the unit to check my rpm's on the low end.

So do we agree that 1400 is a normal idle? Obviously his readings on rpm at 40 and at 65 mph are wrong, but idle is normal, no? I have one of these tachs, and i know from playing around with it when i installed it that there are 3 settings, only one of which is appropriate for wasted spark. but when i had it on the "faster setting," counting every spark, my idle readings were 2500 - 3000.

and on the half setting, idle was below 1000.

    So....why is his idle normal?

Were you idling with the choke on?

I'm thinking his true idle rpm isn't a healthy one or the unit has gone problems.

I believe the manual states that the idling rpm is supposed to be 1300-1500.

I found that I had it set with the write setting ,I can only get it up to 4500 R P M's. Must be a bad unit , Ten $ on E-Bay , I will use it the way that it is. My idle is at 1400 ,when it is hot 80 deg. At 55 deg. It is at ruff at 1200 R P M's till it warms up. It runs like a new bike now.
