Value of a very clean 1987 TW

There is an extremely clean 87 Red TW locally. It has 1850 miles and looks about as good as you could find and still be original. I have a 2014 and love it but I am considering buying this one as well. What would you guys say would be a good deal for it? 00g0g_6MX5L8KKiSR_300x300.jpg

The funky and unique electrical issues of the '87 will always seem a liability in my mind. Thus I tend to under evaluate all '87s by the retail cost of a CDI and some intangible amount for the frustration of the A/C headlight, larger gas cap and turn signal switchgear, etc.
Irregardless of condition I would walk away from any '87 with an asking price of more than $1,000 unless I felt confident I could immediately re-sale it for a profit.
If you like the '87 then by all means get it at whatever price you feel comfortable with.

I had no idea about any electrical issues with that year. They are asking $1500 and I suspect it could be bought for $1200, but I really don't want any electrical problems. Of all the things that I could fix, that would be the last. Thanks for the input.

87's can have CDI problems, but believe me, there are many many out there that have never had a problem. I had one, ran perfect. If he will come down, great. Talk him down because it will need new tubes, tires, etc. They are 30 years old and for safety's sake need to be replaced. Does it run nicely now with no problems?

Maybe you should go get it. $1,200 would be nice if you can talk him down.

If he doesn't bite... pay the $1500!

I have two '87s, and I think they're great. Sure the 30 year old CDI can be an issue, but new CDIs are available. One of mine runs fine with the original CDI, and the other one got a new CDI last year.

I actually like that the headlight doesn't come on until the engine is running. And I like having a kick-starter (which is obviously not unique to '87s).

    Good luck!
Now I must hurry on... for there they go, and I am their leader!
