    Legal and loyalty decisions

My 70 y/o neighbor has gone missing and has not been heard from for three to four months. No relatives available to contact. She just up and disappeared and left her house with everything in it. Itís in a remote spot that canít be seen from other houses. I went up to the house yesterday to see if I could contact her and found that the place is now completely trashed and housing tweakers. Most of the valuables have been stolen but some items of value are still on site. The house is completely trashed. This is a million dollar home. I called the sheriff at 14:00 to report a missing person and burglary but nobody responded. At 18:00 I returned to the house and caught two people loading up on items and detained them for the police. It only took twenty minutes for them to arrive even when I informed 911 that weapons were involved. The sheriff went through the house and Iím told earlier today itís been turned over to the major crime unit partly because blood was found in the house. They mentioned getting cadaver dogs to search the large property. At 15:00 this afternoon I chased off but was unable to catch four more thieves. The sherif was called again and 30 minutes later they arrived. I was informed I should stay away and not get involved due to the risks involved and the liability if I get into a confrontation and end up shooting a tweaker. The sheriff appears to be uninterested and nothing has been done to secure the property or possible crime scene.
Iím torn between trying to protect whatís left of the valuable items and watching the place or taking the sheriffs advice and minding my own business. I just hate to sit and do nothing and watch every thing of value remaining disappear.

Maybe it's best to leave it to LEO's. Got a game cam? Or are able to photo the folks and their license plates? The police might appreciate those...

Tough one. LT is certainly correct. Yet to just stand back and watch an ongoing injustice can't sit well. News media may be your best friend now if intent is to speed up the police response.

I'm in agreement with above. You've nobly done what you can. We are still operating in a functional society, and you have been warned by LE. That could factor into unseen circumstances or legal action in the future. Unfortunately, I think it is time to step down. Focus your efforts on you and your family and your property should you become a target now. Work with your neighbors, for the neighborhood's sake.

Using a gun should only be a last resort to save your life, and no one should know you have it, lest they provoke you into a decision you'll regret remembering all the days of your life. Their not worth it. You did your best.

I spent 30 years in the fire service. Itís tough to stand by and do nothing. I do understand the risks involved in trying to do the right thing, but the fact that our current society doesnít allow for the reasonable protection of our property is wrong. I have too much to risk and too little support so itís best I stay away. The last time I went by there they had a nice table saw and two lawn mowers along with a belt sander weed eater and a router in a pile to load up and take away. Its all most likely gone by now. It will be interesting to see if the sherriffs office can locate her or a relative, or maybe a body. One of our concerns is she is the owner and operator of our water system providing water for 16 homes. The bills havenít been paid for three months. Iím currently trying to fix that and cover the responsibilities for the water system until they figure out where she is, or if there is a relative. Everyone is shocked, but they are all doing nothing. If I sound surprised, Iím not. Just very disgruntled.

How close is the house to yours? My little hood would not put up with tweakers doing anything near here. Do you have way to block the drive at road to keep them from driving up to the house and being out of sight?

I hope they find your neighbor just went on a long cruise and forgot to tell anybody.

If it was my neighbors home. I would protect her property just like my own. The P.C. crowd may not like it, but letting thieves getting away with that crap unchecked, goes against all that I am.
I'm lucky enough to have neighbors that will back me up when I need it and they know they can count on me when needed.

Where do you live? I want to put it on a list of places not to move to. Loads of tweaks? no police protection?
No wonder the tweaks are so brazen. They know that the police don't care.
