What are you guys using for GPS ?

    Hi Guys,
I want to get a GPS for my TW. I'm not the most tech savy guy when it comes to electronics. I have a Garmin unit I use on my Lake Michigan boat so I have some experience with them. The unit on My boat is much to large to adapt to a bike and probably could not take the beating. What do you guys use? Hand held units? Bar mount? Phone? looking for ideas, pros and cons, etc....

    Thanks,
    Jeff

I use an Etrex 10, it's just a basic outdoors GPS. No road maps or topography. Good for marking way points or back tracking if needed. You can also download the "current track" to your computer and see where you went using Google Earth.

I like the Etrex a lot but my need for reading glasses forces me to a bigger screen. I use an old Garmin 550, its old and outdated but I can see the screen no problem. I want to upgrade to a Garmin Montana. I recently got a phone holder and use the Motion X GPS app. The app is terrific for off-road. When I am out in the woods I can put my truck location in and then get directions for walking not driving. It then gives me good trail directions back to my truck. It has a lot of other cool features and for off highway use it is tough to beat. My phone holder was a little pricey, I got it from Hondo Garage. It is super high quality and you will not lose your phone from it in any terrain, but that comes at a price. I still would like to get a Montana.

I just let the CIA track my cell phone and spy on me. It's cheaper than buying a GPS.

I use an I phone 6s in a life proof case with Gaia gps app. I bought a $6.40 ram mount copy with usb outlet that worked 50% of the time at the Swell. The app is a battery sucker. So you need a way to keep the phone charged. It worked great with pre downloaded maps and sat images. I had preloaded routes or I made my own with the app. I had an alternate usb charge port I used when the mount one stopped working. You don’t need cell service for it to work airplane mode. There is another app that is cheaper mentioned in the San Rafael Swell thread Avenza.

A Garmin GPSMap 62s for the TW and DT. I just got a Garmin Zums 395LM for the VStrom.
I also have used Avenza maps on my Android phone when I was down in Quartzsite.

I got the GPSMap so that I could use the BC backroad maps. Sadly, I did not do enough research and those maps will not work on the Zumo, but do work on my Garmin RV760.

Check out Avenza and what maps are available for your area and you may not need a dedicated GPS. My son uses Avenza maps (pro version) for his work in the bush.

I been using a Garmin 550 for like 10 years works great, and teaching an old dog new tricks is always a challenge....

Have the Tourtech bar mount with a locking key works really well have several other mounts for other vehicles

I bought the lifetime maps way back I think they lost money on that one....
