Found out what caused my counter shaft seal to leak,a piece of my shoestring about 4 inches long. I looked under the sprocket cover the day it got yanked off, and never could see it in there, but tonight after a couple of months I looked in there again to find the source of an oil drip, and barely saw the end of it poking out. No drip yet after about 4 hours.

Luckily it broke and didn't take your whole foot in! Ouch. Could have been a bad deal.

I hope it doesn't leak. If it does, its an easy fix. It will take you longer to drain the oil and remove the engine cover than to remove and install a new seal.
If you can't find it, grind it

While you are on that topic...anyone else had problems getting the two screws out that hold the late over the outer seal? I tried but couldn't get them out. Put new chain and sprockets and wanted to put a new seal while i was in there.

I had to use an impact wrench. Very awkward.

    out board seal

Had to add to this older post I found. If you wear-em, make sure to TUCK your left shoe lace in, or else! My son was riding his mom's 2013 TW a few months ago, around the north shore(Oahu) Said he felt a mean tug on his left foot and then a loud pop. Didn't know what that was all about until he stopped at a store and noticed his shoe lace was gone. Said some guy at this time said the bike was leaking oil. At this point he turned around and headed home(35 mi.) Luckily, he didn't run out of oil, cause it had a pretty good drip. Anyways, here's a shot of the carnage.

Amazingly, my counter shaft seal is still holding 6000 miles later. I've got a spare hanging on the wall of the shop though.
