    Getting Ready for Moab

Yep, I know that we have our Moab Trip Thread going on upstairs, but since most of those of us planning on heading to Utah in March hang around down here as well....so out of sure lack of better things to post, here goes:

My workouts are going well, but thus far, with the Christmas Season upon us, my weight remains at the 184/186 range, and I figure I can hold my own through our annual New Years Day Bash in Northeast Indiana...then I will hit it somewhat hard to drop to the 175 level I plan on by mid March....and what I need to finish up any "additions/replacements" for the TW before March. Today, with the temps approaching 50 and a bit of sun, I decided to head out and test out some different surfaces...gravel, dirt, loose stone, at various speeds...mainly to see how the stock front tire performed. I had pretty much decided to dump that, like most of you have suggested, but wanted to see how it handled one more time....actually it did alright, and I didn't notice any big problems with it on the various surfaces, but will none-the-less take your suggestions on a quality replacement.

The TW had been sitting for awhile, probably since before I went to Wisconsin for my father-in-laws funeral....and despite sitting in my large but unheated garage, it took a couple of taps on the starter switch and a full choke, but fire up it did...and it warmed up nicely....note to self: Start the T~Dub at least once a week, or take the battery out...we have 95 days to go, that time, hopefully, will go fast, bringing on, not only the Moab Trip, but Spring in this neck of the woods....

The 2014 as I finished off my ride today a block away from home at the different surfaces over at the County Fairgrounds:

If your stock tire did good today and didn't wash out or cause you to dump your bike, it was because the bike was shut off in the garage. Hoot, get a new one before your trip!

+1! If you think the OEM did alright today, just you wait until you have a 244 or equivalent on there. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the OEM is an AVOIDABLE accident waiting to happen...

just the peanut gallery chiming in, but before I worried about the front tire, I'd get a set of handguards and a decent skid plate on there.

^^^^That stock thing they call a "Skid Plate" is just one step above the foil top on a can of potato chips....

Hand guards are good advice too, but the skid plate is probably more important for Moab. I don't think the risk of barking trees will be as high as smacking your engine on a rock. Remember that cheap bark busters are just finger guillotines.

Yup. I like the Tusk Handguards and the optional spoilers: https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p...lex-Handguards

and the Ricochet skid plate Yamaha TW200 Aluminum Skid Plate | Ricochet Off-Road

I like the handguards for not only the occasional encounter with a tree, but just as likely for me the slow speed tip over that snaps a clutch lever. Tip over protection illustrated above.
