    Civilian Conservation Corps. Absolutely fascinating.

I would be willing to bet we have members who had family that served in the CCC.

Yep, the Old Man was stationed out in Rupert, Idaho, back in the late 30s before getting out and joining the Army Air Corp {Today's Air Force} at the beginning of WWII

We see a lot of CCC projects still benefiting parks out west. Proof that some socialistic programs are good. The funds used were an investment not only in building up the countries infrastructure also in building up the people's self esteem. So much better than a simple soup kitchen hand out. Be proud of your Pop's contribution Hoot.

Working for your money is always a good thing, even in Government...did you check out dad's final payoff??? $1.50 loved it....I remember him telling me, he loved Idaho, but the days were long and the work pretty tedious, and when the Army Air Corp was recruiting in the late 30s, when it was obvious that we were heading for war...he saw the opportunity to put his Mechanic Skills to good use and took the opportunity:

Have shown this before but here he is sitting in the cockpit of the B-29 he was Head Mechanic with at Mather AFB, California in 1942....

U Never Know Cro....dad has some pretty good duty during the war...Lowery in Denver, Mather in No Cal, and New Castle, Delaware, his last stop where he met mom....that Mechanical Stuff, despite only an 8th grade education, kept him stateside and working on planes for 5 years....

My grandfather was at camps around Higgins and Houghton lakes in Michigan. He passed away when I was in the Army ('68) but before that he showed me some of the projects he worked on... tree plantings and roads he worked on. He pointed out specific river bank preservation structures that he built on the Manistee and AuSable rivers while we were trout fishing.

I wish I had understood more about what the CCC was all about back then and had deeper talks with him. I was too young and dumb to milk his brain but he taught me a lot about the outdoors and practical approaches to life. He was such a caring, knowledgeable guy. I really loved that man.

He was a Seabee during WWII and claimed his experience in CCC helped him get that assignment. The Seabees followed the Marines into locations and built bases, landing strips, etc. Aside from the construction work they were tasked with they regularly encountered enemy forces and had to fight them.

CCC projects have stood the test of time because the working people were raised in a society where one was allowed to keep what one earned. Similar projects today end up as mini-Chernobles and are swept under the rug on a regular basis because work ethics, morals, and values of multi-generational social safety net programs have robbed much of the populations that would be employed in similar programs of the necessary work ethic and value systems for such programs to succeed. Sad but true what our nation is becoming.
