Thank you Mike. This is the story.

Wanted - your old kid's books
I teach at an alternative center in Johnson City, TN. I have a self contained class of 7th and 8th graders who have been kicked out of the regular classroom for a myriad of reasons - apathy, defiance, aggression, neglect, drug charges (180 day suspension; there is really no such thing. They just remove them from the regular classroom to make people feel good). One of the things I find great joy in is connecting these kids to education and making them feel worthy of putting in the effort to become reasonable students. Up until this point in their loves they "hate to read". I try very hard to change that by introducing them to great children's lit - Gary Paulsen (Hatchet, Brian's Winter, The River, Harris and Me, The Car, The Winter Room, etc.) is an EASY way to get them hooked. They tend to find that they actually enjoy free reading time each day. The system does not give me any money to buy these types of books and my collection is old and literally falling apart. If any of you guys have teen lit books laying around the house that you no longer need, I would much appreciate the hand-me-downs.
    Thanks,
    Katie

I PM'd her to get a shipping address. I am one of those people that could never throw away a book. There are plenty of them around my house that need a new home.

Yes, it does sound like a good cause. However, if you have Gary Paulsen books laying around make sure you read them before shipping. Especially Harris and Me, which i have mentioned here on the forum before. Drop this person a note too, and make sure she knows that there are tons of free books available on Gutenberg.org., especially those by Percy Keese Fitzhugh. Books: percy keese fitzhugh (sorted by popularity) - Project Gutenberg as well as a great many others. There are also thousands of ebooks available on Amazon for free, you just need to know how to search for them...in Amazon simply search in Kindle books for "0.00". Amazon.com: 0.00 - Teen & Young Adult / Kindle eBooks: Kindle Store

And Barnes and Noble Nook, where the search term is "free". 0.00, Kids, Teens | Barnes & Noble Neither Kindle books nor Nook books require any sort of device to read them. Both Amazon and Barnes and Noble have free apps you can download to read books on a computer or even a phone.

A couple more examples of what's available on Gutenberg. Books: kjelgaard (sorted by popularity) - Project Gutenberg

Books: kipling (sorted by popularity) - Project Gutenberg

And of course there are still those great brick and mortar institutions called Libraries. There is no longer any reason that kids who want to read can't have abundant material for free.

Well, if she sent it to you, I stand down. Woman ought to know her own name...especially an English teacher.
