    I have always gone with "teach them correct principals, let them govern themselves"
    Now, my daughter gives me a lecture if I go to the store on the scooter without a helmet.

    It's too late at that point. Children learn all they need to know by the age of five. Maybe some tune ups through to 12 or 13 or so, but sooner or later you have to release the arrow.
