A Night On The Town...with Hot Rods

After a traditional basque dinner with friends ( I had salad, beans, chicken, rabbit, sweetbreads, soup, bread, wine and ice cream) we walked downtown and watched several thousand custom hot rods and classic restored cars parade by in front of the casinos until overcome by smoggy fumes. It is the annual Hot August Nights event with 6,500+ registered restored or customized vehicles on display. In addition to the displays, drag races, and auctions, there are the Show-n-Shine cruising on closed downtown streets open to registered vehicles only.

The registered cars cruising the streets are awesome, and it is great that owners are willing to risk a bug or two hitting the paint. However there are thousands of others just too precious and perfect to see the street or strip and are static displays. p17uiukjnt18dstd21on213ru1ipk5.jpgmqdefault.jpgmaxresdefault.jpghot-august-nights-engine.jpghot-august-nights-drag-races-burnouts.jpg

Alas the drags are only a wimpy 1/8th mile long behind one of the casinos for safety and liability concerns. Still gets the crowd excited yet it is safe with few damaged machines. The origins of the event years ago of course featured wild drags on city streets, lots of burn-outs, and unlimited cruising, noise and drinking to keep local police on their toes. Is all family rated 50's and 60's nostalgia now. img_2625_0.jpg

If you want a 1939 GM Futureliner this one will cross the auction block this weekend. Plan to bring more than $1,000,000 if you want to bring it home. HAN_Futurliner.jpg

Yeah, I would have fit inside that rim much easier than the drier drum at the laundromat in my youth. Let's go for a spin!

The other BIG FOOT truck parked just behind shows just how much evolution in Monster Truck design has occurred.d77eafe6f79c87d4ec1f90ec83aeb7c7.jpg
