    It never ceases to amaze me how unknowledgeable the repair shops in this city are. I cannot find anyone to answer my question so I would like to ask it here.



    I have wired a headlight on my son's TTR230 (very similar engine to our TW's). With the headlight on while riding, the battery is depleted. The stator on this bike has a lighting coil, for charging the battery, but obviously I am exceeding the wattage for both charging and running a light. I have wired the headlight directly to the battery (switched at the ignition). Does is matter if I wire the headlight (switched) directly to the battery or directly from the stator - from a charging perspective, does coming directly from the stator less likely to discharge the battery? Intuitively, I would think that it doesn't matter - both get the same wattage and coming from the stator does not prevent battery drain. Input?

    um... I'm trying to figure out why I'm just now seeing both your posts. I know they weren't here last night when I was reading the forum.

    And I see the date on the first one.

    I would tend to agree that connecting the headlight to the battery or the stator would draw equally. From a schematic point of view the connection is basically in the same place, just at different ends of the same wire.



    Can you try a lower watt bulb? I'm sure that now I can see your post others will too and chime in with their knowledge.

    I'm running a 35W bulb. I have researched the TTR230 and it should be capable of running 35W and not loosing charge, but that is clearly not the case. I put a voltmeter across the battery with the light off and engine idling - 13.8V and climbing. Switch the light on and drops to 12.6, down to 12.2, still slowly dropping. Rev the bike with the light on and the voltage climbs. Odd. We rode for about 4 hours and when we stopped, his bike was dead, would not start (electric start only). With a ride, it should be reving in the charging range. Oh, battery is new last year and I tended it in the shop all winter. I could run a 25W bulb, if I can find one. I am also thinking about an LED (3W) from China - this headlight is not for night driving, its required by law here for offroad riding and must be visable from 60m, which I'm sure the LED would work. The other option is rewinding the stator, which I had hoped to avoid.

    Next diagnostic step I'd take is measure the resistance on the light circuit. Could there be a corroded wire or connection that makes the light pull more that 35W?
