Sort of a neat story. My Grandfather was a lawyer in town when this happened. (yeah, I'm third generation lawyer). Used to hear all the stories about this, fascinating, sort of like Hoot's great outlaw story. According to my Grandfather, and I believe it is true, after a run in with Dillinger, which did not go well, the Auburn Police Chief spouted off about what would happen to Dillinger if he ever came back to the newspapers. Apparently Dillinger saw the article and indeed came back. He locked all officers in their own cell, took their arms and threw them in Cedar Creek and kept the Thompson. There has to be a lesson in there somewhere.
