    Bike for brother

My younger brother is learning on my TW and is looking for a first bike to purchase. I of course am doing the right thing and to steer him towards a dual sport for obvious reasons. He has interest in a cruiser but I can't have fun on the trails with one of those. Anyways he is 6ft 6in and about 220lbs. He will need to be able to ride on interstates for a few miles here and there. He needs a tall bike and he has a small budget of $1750. I'm thinking a XT 350 or DR350, the newer liquid 250 bikes would work but the price won't. Anybody have any input on a bike for a tall beginner?

You should be able to score a nice klr 250 for that price. It's kick start only, and it's a little underpowered, bit it can be geared down to have second gear hill climbpower and still have a sixth gear tal
k enough for 60 or 65 mph highway cruising. it's an awesome bike for the money!
    KJ, just KJ, ok.

Thanks for the info. Is the klr 250 the same engine as the klx 250's around 06-08?

Glad I can be of help. I'm not sure of all the differences, other than the KLR being kick-start only, but the KLX250 does use a newer engine design. If you do get a KLR, be sure to check the valves every 3k miles.

As for the DR350, sadly, I'd have to recommend steering clear of it. The problem is, that particular bike is just a big gamble. If you are unlucky enough to get one of the few that are affected by the "counterbalancer problem", it will likely grenade on you at some point. If you get one of the good ones, which most reportedly are, it may well go 50k miles, because generally speaking, the DR350 is an amazing machine. I just couldn't bring myself to ride something that I knew MIGHT be a ticking time bomb. Also, I'd suggest an old DR650, but if memory serves, they are known for engine gasket failures which cause oil leaks (as are older TW's...). I suppose you could always just pull the top end apart and replace the gaskets. If you were so-inclined, that could be a great choice, although you might be hard-pressed to find even an old one for under two grand.
