    Question Help with electrical "problem" please!

    Your 90 year old grandmother is probably more competent than me, when it comes to all things electrical. So anyway, I bought this Speedo Healer kit for my 2015 XT 250, to correct the speedometer error. I eventually got it installed and set up correctly (the speedometer is accurate now). However, when I had the engine running and the transmission in neutral (at a stop), the factory Yamaha speedometer was continually displaying random numbers. When I put it back in gear, it immediately went back to displaying a constant zero, and worked perfectly when I started moving again.

    My questions are a) why is it doing this and how can I fix it? and b) is there any chance that this could cause any kind of problem (other than possibly draining the battery since the device's power wire is hooked directly to the positive terminal right now) that could give me a big headache. I have a big ride coming up this Sunday, and I don't want any problems like shorts/blown fuses or anything... If the random numbers won't be an issue, then I'll make permanent connections on my wire splices and actually properly set this thing up (right now the wires and the box are just hanging over the seat...), and sort out the issue of the random in-neutral display later.

    Nothing to offer except to call the manufacturer, that doesn't sound right to me.

    Sounds like some sort of interference or harmonic issue. Check where things are grounded, and pick your power from a switched source that is not the ignition circuit.

    Wish you were closer, I'd be glad to help.

    Thanks everyone! I did call the manufacturer/distributor, but they haven't been able to help, yet. Something about the owner having a family emergency, and they are working on it and supposed to contact me soon...

    If one of the wires I spliced was touching bare metal or one of the other wires, perhaps...? It may well be, right now, since my current temporary connections are very shoddy. I'll make sure the connections are good and see if there's anything on that note. Oh and I've been planning on moving the device's power wire to a switched source, instead of the battery's positive terminal. That might help, you say? I'm not sure how/where to hook up the power wire, but google is my friend, so I can probably figure something out lol. In the meantime, if you have an idea of where and how I can hook up power, please let me know. I'll be in and out (TW forum/outside with the bike) for the next hour or two probably, as I work on this. Thanks!


    Oh and I almost forgot; the speedometer only displays random numbers when the bike is in neutral and NOT moving/not rolling forward with the clutch lever OUT. If I pull in the clutch lever (whether in gear or in neutral), it will go back to zero. While the clutch lever is held in (again, whether or not it's in neutral), it will show one or two random numbers if I rev up the engine, and then drop back to zero.

    Okay, I'm thinking to tap into the rear running light wire. Since this is only on when the key is in the on position, my Speedo Healer device shouldn't be drawing any current from the battery unless the key is on, right?

    EDIT: It was simple enough getting it to work like this; power is routed to the divice only when the ignition key is turned on now. However, it is still exhibiting the random numbers problem. At this point I'm ready to just hook this thing up and forget about it (since everything works fine when it needs to). The random numbers won't bother me as long as it all keeps working without any other problems.

    Smitty: I don't suppose you would know/could tell me if there are any other potential problems that could arise from this setup??

    I would go with Smitty Blackstones line of thought. Sounds like a high impedance ground connection from the unit to ground. Where/to what, did you ground it?

    I just connected the device's ground wires to those of the speed sensor, where I spliced into it.

    It's half way done now. Just need to redo the sensor side connection to the device and route and tie off those wires, then put the bike back together. I might go back into this later, but I have that ride Sunday and lots of stuff like work and such, between now and then, so I'm really out of time for now, except to put it together as it currently functions. I could just remove the Speedo Healer but at this point that would be more work than finishing its installation. I probably should have done this big ride first and then installed this thing, but I didn't figure it would be such a friggin big deal (always is, for me, it would seem...).

    Anyway, for now the device is serving its intended purpose, and doesn't seem to be causing any issues, so I'll just live with it for now, at least. Might try to fix it later, might not...

    P.S. I would still be interested in hearing about any potential problems that may arise from this thing - set up as it now is/will be - if anyone thinks of anything that could potentially be a concern.

    Okay. I got everything set up with permanent corrections, got all the wires routed, and everything tucked away nicely Since it works perfectly other than the problem described above, I decided that I'd just finish it up and roll with it. As long as it works as intended - which it does - I don't care about a few random numbers... It's nice to look down and see 60 on the highway, and know I'm actually doing 60, instead of being lied to lol.

    Hmm. You may well be right. Well, it's done now (as per the instructions that came with the kit...). If I ever get back into it, I'll try a different ground. Thanks.

    The obvious: The bike should be in gear at a stop, if you are on the road.
