    TW200 and BW200 commonalities

Just curious, a buddy is looking at getting either an old Honda Fat Cat or a BW200/300 (he's an ATC guy historically) and I told him about my interest in buying a TW200, and so we are wondering what mechanical similarities are there between the BW200 and the TW200? To us, the 200 engines look about the same, but looks can be deceiving! My advice to him was to look for a BW200... if the engines are similar, and as the TW200 is still in production, engine/tranny parts would be readily available... not sure about the Fat Cat or BW300 engine...

The TW200 and BW200 use a lot of the same parts you are correct. The biggest difference is in how the two bikes allow fitment of the fat rear tire setups. The TW200 uses a extended trans output shaft and special stator cover that supports the nose of the long shaft. The BW200 use a short/conventional length trans output shaft, but uses a jackshaft setup in the swing arm to step the chain run outboard to clear the fat rear tire. Also for some weird reason the BW200 came with a decompression lever as well on the head while the TW200 does not.

You can pretty much combine engine parts and pieces from all of the following bikes if you need parts. There are a few little tricks and tweaks required but they all mix and match very well.

    - XT225
    - TW200
    - BW200
    - XT200
    - TTR225
    - TTR230

The parts that are hard to find for a BW200 are the weird little parts like the swingarm eccentric primary chain adjusters , CDI's, swingarm chain guards and guides etc. Also BW200 plastics/tanks/wheels are very expensive when compared to a TW200.

The TW200 and BW200 engines are basically the same with just a few differences. The BW200 has compression release that is linked in with the kick starter. The BW200 uses a different carburetor with a single cable throttle. The left side cover and output shaft are different due to the jackshaft drive of the BW. I believe that the BW200 has a 4 plate clutch instead of the 5 plates that the TW has, so the clutch baskets and right side cover are also different. The head, cylinder, and piston and many internal engine parts should be interchangeable.

So it seems that some of the engine parts that would typically need to be replaced due to wear (pistons, rings, etc.) may be common.

Thanks, I'll let my buddy know...
