    Simple Grab Bar for TW

    The first change I did to my bike in 2003 was add a simple grab bar made from 24" of 7/16ths bar vise bent in a "U". After removing the rubber plugs from the ends of the sub-frame the grab bar was rubber malleted into place and has been a very helpfull $5 addition for lifting, tir-downs and towing logs, etc. Here is the battered remnants next to a stock sub-frame. Thought I would show it before it gets erplaced.

    It is going on the scrapheap since a grab bar is integral with new frame extension that day bag and cyclerack will bear upon..

    Seems like there would be a market for something like that! Full racks are not something I am interested in, but a grab bar/tow hook I would be.

    My enduro bikes always had a webbing loop for help with lifting the bikes out of trailside trouble but the TWs fender benefited more from something rigid that extended to the rear. The drilled holes are from when I subsequently loverloaded it to failure by attaching to several rack generatins. Failure occured where subframe's mounting tabs were torn off from cycle's frame proper.
    These systems need a weak link to fail before damage gets transfered to the main frame but I thought the OEM sheet metal grade mounting tabs were just a little too weak a link to accept the CycleRack and Rotopak loads I asked of it. New 1/2 square tubing hopefully provides a compromise level of support, rigid enough for service loads yet will bow then bend when progressively overloaded before screwing up the frame.
    Old loop really held up well over a decade and is not bent despite lifting bike out of ruts, towing a 55 gallon water trailer, dragging railroad ties, acting as a tie-down point in my pick-up, hanging bike from rafters for tire changes, etc...
