DR650 Fuel Tank On TW (3.4 Gallons)

I found an almost new take-off DR650 fuel tank (complete w/ cap and fuel valve for $100) - picking it up tomorrow.

It is a steel, 3.4 gallon factory Suzuki tank. Me thinks it will fit TW with a little help. The Clarke tank is plastic, and only 2.8 gallons - so at less then 1/2 the price, I am going to give the DR tank a try. The fuel valve is on the LH side, so that is good.

I will post pics / report when completed.

    Wish me luck!

Let me know if this works. I'd consider getting one if it does.

How about a KLR650 tank? 6.1 gallons, vacuum actuated petcock. Fill it up in the spring and ride all summer.

That would be way to fancy for my TW - C'mon now. 6.1 would probably tip her right over too.

Might have to put some outriggers on it, deploy them when slowing down.

Slowing down??? The TW never really speeds up.

I digress - back to thinking about the DR to TW tank fitment....

Great to see some research on this. The limit of the stock tank has been an issue for me. The fit of the Clarke and lack of a locking cap are a minus. Keep us posted on this project.

I have a KLR tank and I thought about putting it on the TW so I gave it a try.
    It will fit!
It will need some adjustments though.

Like cutting it into 8 pieces, removing sections of length, width, and height.
Then welding the jigsaw back together, hammering it sort of smooth, covering it with bondo and sanding it down, then paint.

I have a DR tank on the shelf so I am also interested in what you find out.

I'm good with a hammer, so it shouldn't be an issue - ha!

Given enough time, money, and imagination anything can be made to work.
Long live the internal combustion engine!
