Restoring a rusty 1987 header pipe

Hello everyone. I recently removed the rust and painted the header pipe on my 1987 TW200. I thought I would share the process and upload some pics. First I let the header pipe, bracket and bolts soak in a awesome product called Evapo-Rust for 24 hours. This stuff is amazing just 5mins with a wire brush after the soak and ALL rust was completely removed. I then painted the parts with Rust Oleum High Heat primer and oven cured per the instructions. Then came 2 coats of Rust Oleum High Heat flat black and another oven curing process. I also got myself a replacement muffler from a 2014 TW on Ebay for a good price. The original was rusty and had been modified to be louder. It came out pretty nice. The rear mount on the 2014 muffler doesn't exactly line up with the 1987, so two HD hose clamps have it secured to the sub-frame until I drill a new hole for the bolt. 20180629_162823.jpg

I like that Evapo-Rust and it is reusable but after a while it stops working.

Oh hey, man, nice Marmot! (Couldn't help the movie quote) Location updated, thanks for the heads up I'm still getting comfortable with social media. Just had our 6th recorded tornado up here since records began in 1950, and a still burning 13K acre wildfire 10 miles to the south. A week to be remembered, for sure. And yeah that Evapo-Rust is great stuff. I found an old cast iron dutch oven while out hiking about a month ago. I have no idea how long it was sitting out there but it was horribly rusted. Evapo-rust and a re-seasoning and the thing looks like I just bought it new!

Good luck with the high heat paint. I’ve never tried it but I did try Stove Black Grill paint that I applied with a brush. It didn’t last 1000 miles before it started rusting again.

I just bought a Stainless steel header pipe from a member so my ugly header pipe days are over...at least on one of my TWs

Yeah I'm hoping that taking it down to bare metal and thoroughly curing both paints will do the trick, time will tell. Shiny stuff and brights colors aren't for me, but I had no idea a stainless pipe was even an option! Boy, if I ever find an XT225 parts bike I'm going to be BUSY!

If you still have it, put the heat shield back on the pipe.
