There is a site glass on the right side of the crankcase. Hold the bike upright on level ground and look at it. Pretty simple.

Sight glass on the right side. Make sure it's between the two lines.

Warm the bike up for 6-7 minutes at idle
Shut bike off and level the bike using some wood or phone books under the kick stand
Just get it level. Wait 3 minutes then look at oil sight window and make sure the level is inbetween the 2 marks
My 1989 tdub takes 1 quart and 1 half ounce after a filter and oil change

Tip: I use a small magnetic level on top of the cross bar on bars to get it
    level

Also never check the oil level when the bike is really hot! You will get a high inaccurate oil reading. Oil expands when hot
