I need a new carb for the old 89, so figured I could upgrade. Ive heard so many problems with the tk carbs
The yamaha tech down the rd. Said Get a mikuni if I can find one
I did just find a Pretty good deal on a oem tk for $260.00 new.
Also when I buy a new carb...will it come with new drain hoses?
Would you know what size drain hoses I would need to purchase if I bought the oem tk carb
    Mine are all brittle
    Thanks

New TKs come with all the hoses you will need and some here have found them a bit cheaper, $240 + S&H I think someone posted. I bought 2 of them for my bikes at the $260 and it was the best money I spent so far. Drops right in and runs fine but remove the plug over the pilot adjustment before you install it and set the screw at 2 full turns out. Go from there once the bike is warmed up for fine tuning.

Going to a different carb sounds good but can get expensive real fast and you will still have the same problems. It is the BS E-10 fuel we are forced to use causing 90% of our carb and tank problems. Pure gas, Burn it if you can get it.

Gary if I get the oem carb, is it also a TK?

Also what does 2 full turns out do? So you mean put that screw at 2 full turns out before putting carb on bike?

    Thanks

Yes, you get the exact same carb as you have now, old style TK. When the carb arrives you remove the brass plug on the bottom that is covering the pilot screw. Then you turn the pilot screw all the way in until it bottoms out.no need to be tight, just till it hits bottom. Then you turn it back out two full revolutions or four half turns going by the position of the slot. It is much easier to do with the carb in your hands and this gives you a good starting point once you mount the carb.

You can buy the $26 BW200 carb on eBay and others claim they work but are you mechanically proficient enough to overcome the modifications necessary? I am also sure there are other carbs out there that can be made to work but again, these are not for the novice who just wants to get his bike running. Unless you are very competent around tools and technical skills I highly recommend you just buy a new OEM stock Carb. You might also check the boot from the carb to the air box. These are known to get very hard and shrink making it very difficult to get a solid seal around the carb throat.
