    Hella 500 install

    I recently installed a 55w Hella 500 light. Wired it directly to the low beam and then taped the high beam off in order to run without a the light on. Here is my question. When running, the hella will dim when i throttle up. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem is? Thanks tw200.jpg

    Is it possible to upgrade that so it would run brighter?

    To upgrade the stator would have a three figure price, and you may run into other components on your bike that can’t handle the increased output

    You can however upgrade the bulb ……..

    CREE LED’s give out a much brighter white light – it’s a “plug and play” drop in – but do not exceed the 35w your original headlight was rated for

    This gives you options – probably up to 3400 lumen at 35w – but anywhere in-between 3000 lumen and 3400 lumen and you’re good to go

    What you’re looking for is the most lumen possible without exceeding 35w

    Ebay has loads of options – check out this one for a start – but there are loads of them around, probably a bit closer to home

    I do not have the original headlight or bracket. I have also switched to run LED brake and turn signals. Would an upgraded stator have any issues with that?

    The replacement LED bulb should still fit into whatever set-up you have – you’re only replacing the bulb.

    A replacement stator from Yamaha would cost in excess of $300 – and then you have possible wiring and other component issues with the increased output – notably the regulator/rectifier

    I’ve got this bulb conversion on my ’98 – same output as yours – together with tail light LED’s etc

    What I’ve saved by changing out other bulbs still would not be enough to feed a 55w headlight

    You can still keep the whole “Hella” shell, and the look of it – just change the bulb – or change the bike (to a post 2000 TW) ………………..

    Another option would be to just get a 35 watt halogen H3 bulb. Hella makes them, as do other companies. A 35 watt halogen bulb powered by a 35 watt stator will be brighter than a 55 watt bulb powered by the same stator.

    I have a 1998 tw200 which should have the same wiring system as the 1990, and I've been running 96 watts of LED light out front and I've never had a dead battery. While I don't know the actual stator output of my bike, I know that with the lights running, the battery begins to charge at anything past 1750 rpm. I have two of those square "48." watt led lights out front, on at all times. I put "48" in quotation marks because that is what they are marketed as. Actual draw is 32 watts, or 64 watts for both. They have a tiny, almost unnoticeable flicker at a low idle, but if I turn the idle a fraction higher, it's gone. I respect what you have said Purple, but r-marsh, I believe that 55 watt light will work just fine.

    Oh, I'm sorry, I had understood that you were wondering if it would work or not. I reread your comment and can now see that you have tried it, and notice that it gets dim at an idle.

    You can either just bear it, turn the idle up a little until it gets bright, or follow the other good ideas that have been lifted out here. Cheers!
