I can't seem to find any interval in the '01 supplement for checking the timing chain tensioner.

Does anyone know how often it should be checked?

I also could not understand how to check it in place from the manual, only how to install/uninstall it. Apparently it works completely differently from the older one.

    Thanks

It is fully automatic, no checks to do.

If the timing chain doesn't rattle it's working.

Uh, pardon my ignorance, but how do I tell a timing chain rattle from all the other rattles the bike makes, particularly the one under hard accelleration?

I've heard people on this forum say this bike likes to make weird noises and rattles, and it's normal to a degree. Just depends on what it is and how loud I guess, somebody that knows the bike inside and out can help you more.

Timing chains make a sort of jingling sound rather than a regular rattle and often go quieter as you rev the engine, unless it's really worn out.

You may be mistaking a rattle for pinging under hard acceleration, that could be a lean fuel mixture rather than any wear and tear.

All TW's rattle a bit, because they are air cooled you don't have any sound insulation that a water jacket provides.

Sorry but it is so difficult to diagnose unusual sounds without actually hearing it, if you are worried or a novice then it's probably best to get an experienced ear to check it for you. But I expect you are worrying about nothing.

Ronnydog and I were talking one day and a had a pretty good giggle at ourselves when we discovered that unbeknownst to one another we had both put a lot of energy into building "steath" exhausts for our bikes for hunting. We each had succeded in almost totally silencing the exhaust and had both independently arrived at the same conclusion.

The mechanical noise from a TW motor at practically any speed above idle is nearly equal to the level of the exhaust note, once the exhaust noise is taken out of the equation.

Installing an aftermarket skid plate will sometimes completely freak you out on your first ride. They amplify these sounds directly upward, and you'll swear all of the sounds are new, and that danged thing is gunna explode.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Powdercoated '87 frame, extended swingarm, YZ fork legs, ATV tire, 14/55, XT350 tank, spliced quick-release seat, disc brake conversion, beeg headlight, beeger rack, Lizrdcooler, Lizrdventz and bunch of other stuff all covered in invisible ink.
