    So - My 89 TW has been sitting for over two years, victim of the eBay carb kit that is full of worms! Well I've finally got some time (and got OEM Yamaha parts) to correct the cheapo carb kit's disaster. Everything has gone smooth, but right after I took the valve seat screw off, I ran into a difficult problem. For whatever reason I cannot get the valve seat to come out. My guess is the cheap rubber gasket the carb kit came with has become like glue inside the carb body. I've been soaking and soaking now, for 24 hours. Not even vice grips can get this thing out. I'm starting to think I might be in big trouble, as in, have to buy a used carb... Any suggestions?

    You didn't say what you're soaking it in. Some kind of penetrating solvent, like PB Blaster?



    Just thinking out loud... will soaking it cause the o-ring to expand more, making it more difficult to remove the valve seat?



    If all else fails, you can drill out the valve seat. I believe it is made of brass, so it shouldn't be too hard.

    If you're thinking another carb anyway, drilling is worth a try.



    Use a drill press and start with a small bit and gradually increase the bit size.

    I think the stuff is called "Bolt off" but similar to PB blaster. No luck yet. I don't have a drill press but I'm quite sure I have access to one. I may send it to my friend with one and just let him get it out of there!

    Had machine shop take the piece out. But dealer said since one of the float pin posts were broken the carb is toast.. Ordered a new one today on boats.net w/ discount for $299.. guess its time to put troubles behind me and ride on!

    Sorry your carb was not salvageable.



    Ron Ayers has the '89 carb listed for $264.95.



    I have wondered how the newer TK carb would work on the older bikes.



    Since the engine block is the same, it shouldn't be a problem, but until someone tries it.......



    The reason I mention this is that the newer TK carb is listed for $211. at Ron Ayers,



    Quite a savings.

    Canceled my order with Boats.net thanks to your advice and prices at Ron Ayers. I also discovered for whatever reason, I didnt get the newer style carb ordered. I really want to run the 2010 model carb. There shouldn't be any hiccups by ordering the 2010 model and hooking it up should there? As far as I know it should bolt up and go?

    That question has been asked a few times on the forum. I can't recall anyone posting that they made the change.



    I haven't studied the pre 2001 TW's, but the engine and the airbox appear the same in the close up photos I have seen.



    The '89 airbox [s]and the cylinder head joint[/s] have the same part numbers as the 2010 TW.



    The throttle cable part # has a different prefix and suffix, but the main part number is the same.



    [s]It looks to be a straight swap,[/s] but until someone tries it, we won't know for sure.



    edit: see post #10 below.




    If you decide to go ahead with new 2010 carb substitution, please take some photos and post the results. It could benefit other forum members in the same situation.



    If you would like to part with your old carb, I would pay a nominal amount and postage.

    After examining the online parts fiche, it appears that the throttle cable bracket and pulley of the new TK carb are on the opposite side of the carb from the '89.



    That may account for the slightly different throttle cable part number. In the diagram of the newer throttle cable, it looks longer than the '89 cable.



    It's possible that the old throttle cable won't be long enough to reach the bracket on the new carb.



    The new throttle cable is ~$27.



    Also, discovered the rubber boot ($13.) that connects the rear of the carb to the airbox has a different prefix and suffix on the part number, which means that may not be the same either.



    And the rubber boot hose clamp ($5.) has a different part number.



    The cylinder head joint ($52.) and clamp ($5.) have different part #s too.



    The total of all the extra parts to make it fit, in addition to the new version of the carb, will boost the price to more than the exact replacement carb.



    Sorry for the confusion but you may want to change your order once again.
