is it a bad thing to run a tw200 without a spark arrester in a stock exhaust or aftermarket? i know it should get louder but will it damage the engine?putting aside legal issues im more concerned about performance and ridability. the bike is brand new, 43 miles on it so far, should i wait till it has more miles before tinkering with it?

I would wait until you get 1,000,000 miles on the bike before removing the spark arrestor.

The main concern you must have is that if you make the exhaust flow more air, it will cause your bike to run leaner. The bike is already very lean from the factory. Too lean = burnt piston. The spark arrestor won't change the airflow by much, but just to be safe, if you insist on not having a spark arrestor, I would wait and do the removal as part of the rejetting process, just to be on the safe side.

Rodney is correct. The stock jetting sucks unless you live high in the mountains. Rejet and you'll be fine whatever you do with the pipe. Note that operation without the spark arrestor will probably void your warranty.

As one of many who live in areas subject to wildfire/forest fire risks, I will state unequivocally that only a moral cripple would run without a spark arrester. It may be more fun, but it places other people, their property, pets, and livelyhoods at danger. Please reconsider your priorities. Tom

Sheesh, I was gonna mention how irresponsible it is to run without a spark arrestor but figured I'd just get flamed like last time.

Don't get caught in a national park/forest/monument/etc. without a spark arrestor. They'll take your bike and lock you up.

I tried to imply that it was not a good idea. Maybe I should be less subtle next time.

I apologize if I seemed too blunt. At least I did not use Capital Letters. I'm a biologist and like nature. I'm a human and I like people (most people) and I appreciate health, safety, stable economies, and clean air. All of these depend upon preventing the myriad of grass, forest, house, and general wildfires that plague this country every year when people are careless with smokes, campfires, and vehicles modified to circumvent safety devices. The idea of hundreds of square miles in numerous states devoid of living vegetation and most of the fauna due to wildfires offends me. Ride safely and please help us stay green. Tom
