I do believe these are separate problems, but what do I know? Not much really.

Issue 1: At certain RPMs it feels like the engine is shutting off. It idles fine, and rides perfectly fine at most speeds, no issues at all. However, at certain RPMs (I have no tach, so I can't say exactly where, but it's most noticeable in 3rd gear at 30-35mph) It behaves like I've just completely let go of the throttle and starts to rev down, I have to gun it hard to bring it back up. This happens when I'm riding at a steady speed around 30-35mph I *have* to ride at 29mph or like 37mph and then it just cruises smoothly forever. In 2nd gear it does this around 20-23mph, so I think it's an RPM zone, I just don't know exactly what RPMs since I have no tach. My thought is that it has something to do with the carb?

Issue 2: I took the bike to a shop this week and they did some work, but he thought perhaps the timing chain was the cause of the ticking. He adjusted valves and they seem good. The ticking is really quite loud and increases with higher RPM.

    Bike:

2005, 6,500 miles. I've had it since it was almost brand new and have noticed both issues slowly on-setting over the last year or so. They're just a lot more pronounced now than ever before.

Jason, to provide some insight, I think folks with need more information. Year of the bike, how many miles and how long have "YOU" had it? Did this problem come on gradually or all of a sudden. Gerry
    Take care my Friend.........

I would think if it was a timing chain issue that it would quiet down with throttle. I guess there could be something wrong with the tensioner though..

I would definitely clean your carb thoroughly and check your spark plug to make sure the "ticking" isn't being caused by a lean condition.

You could try to raise the needle to see if that gets rid of your first problem? As for the ticking, it usually comes from the valves, try a different oil or learn to live with it. It is typical of these bikes.

My 2005 with 5600 miles was doing the same thing this weekend. If I'm riding steady at high rpm it quits then comes right back on. Doesn't matter which gear or speed. Just sustained high rpm. I don't know how to describe it. Quits, surges, misses, skips, cuts out, dies, hesitates whatever. I'm not so sure it is the jetting as I was originally thinking. Others I was riding with had the same setup and no problems. I'm starting toi think it is electrical. If anyone has any suggestions I'm open to ideas.

If its cutting out after sustained high rpm I would check your fuel flow. Pull the fuel hose off and turn it on, it should run a steady stream out of tank. If its not the mesh screen on the petcock is probably clogged up.. If thats good, check carb fuel inlet valve. This is the valve on the float inside carb. Take the float off, there is one phillips screw under it, take that out and pull the brass float valve out of the carb body. You will find a fine mesh screen in there that often clogs up with gunk. It will let enough fuel in for low throttle but cant keep up with sustained high throttle.

I will check it. I just installed a new clarke tank, brand new petcock and new in line filter. The carb was recently completely disassembled, cleaned, re jetted and shimmed. It has a 130 main and 3 shims on the needle. It has been running fine. Seems only to act up at WOT at high rpm. I will dig into it this week. I'm not the only one with this issue.

n202diver, I'm running the exact same problem... 2002 w/ 22k on it. She starts fine, and runs fine.. I notice at the high RPM of every gear it flutter/gag's for power almost... i havent had it stall out, usually change gears once it happens or back off the throttle in 5th @ 80km like this.

You can check my thread out - my mechanic is going to swatch out a CDI and carb from his friends bike as a test - I just purchased this as my first bike and I really want to solve the issue.. please let me know if you find a solution! I'll do the same.
