During the last two days of riding the steering has seemed a little different. Not sure how to describe it but it seems like The steering is "heavy" , at one point a few weeks ago I had a front tire puncture and my PS I was reduced to 10. The steering at the moment is like that but not as severe. Where should I look for a possible cause?

Time to service your steering bearings.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Powdercoated '87 frame, extended swingarm, YZ fork legs, ATV tire, 14/55, XT350 tank, spliced quick-release seat, disc brake conversion, beeg headlight, beeger rack, Lizrdcooler, Lizrdventz and bunch of other stuff all covered in invisible ink.

"Special" is relative. Read through the procedure in the service manual and make sure you have all the tools you'll need.

Its not that bad. You'll need a punch (5/16" diameter or so, about a foot long) and a bearing and race installer (found at auto parts stores, or you can use a big socket). My link
If you can't find it, grind it

Great write up! Was your dads bike the first time you tackled the steering bearings on a motorcycle? How long did it take you?
