I was pondering the result of adding a .6 capacity quart oil cooler on my TW.. With the one quart stock oil capacity , would there be a problem of "flooding" the crankcase with an over fill of oil if the filter is above the engine and gravity takes it measure. If the system is sealed , I assume all is OK.. but with the crankcase breather , I wonder if the oil from the cooler would drain into the engine in places where it should not be...water seeks it own leval ~ maybe oil does...Thanks in advance..

Half a quart is a fair amount of extra oil. The answer is "maybe". It depends on the filter design and the location of the fittings.

If both fittings are at the top, gravity makes the cooler function as a tank. No drainback occurs after shutdown except for the oil in the lines.

Most coolers hold far less, only a few ounces, so the overfill is inconsequential.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Powdercoated '87 frame, extended swingarm, YZ fork legs, ATV tire, 14/55, XT350 tank, spliced quick-release seat, disc brake conversion, beeg headlight, beeger rack, Lizrdcooler, Lizrdventz and bunch of other stuff all covered in invisible ink.

I believe my oil 'cooler' tank carries an extra 8 oz. As Russ indicates, an inlet/outlet at the top prevents the oil draining/siphoning back into the crankcase. Gerry

    Take care my Friend.........

Received your adapter yesterday. THANK YOU !!! I bought one of these "coolers" and am thinking if the fittings were at the top, the resevoir would not drain into the crankcase (cept fot the hose lines.) Id like to mount it inverted ,just for a cleaner hose route but that nay not be in the cards. Thanks again.http://www.ebay.com/itm/170845442546...84.m1497.l2648

This was a great question.............. 30 years ago I added a cooler to my 750 yammie and the directions never mentioned anything about the extra oil... Oh well, to late now. (o; OMM.
