    My uncle's TW

    Hi All.

    We live about 7 hours apart so I can't check things, but.....
    He has a 1989 model and says the carb needs replacing.

    Does this sound correct?
    Is the carb rebuildable?

    He takes really good care of stuff and this thing is in pristine condition!

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    No problem about posting location Soundguy. However if you start in the technical help section of the forum and use the search feature using words like “Carb re-build” there is a wealth of related posts. Your Uncle’s carb likely needs cleaning rather than replacement.

    First up – welcome to the board

    Second up – sounds like your uncle is a good guy – take some time and go and visit (more often than you do)

    Yes, the ’89 carb can be re-built, it’s only metal, and replacement parts are readily available – but (there’s always a “but” somewhere), that depends on what’s wrong with the thing

    Jets are replaceable, but watch out for which jet kit you get, because “not all jets are created equal”. Tell that to the Chinese Airforce and they’ll laugh at you, but the jet sizes vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. What some would call a 120 may be different from what the other considers to be the same size – crazy, but true

    You could take the alternative route, and simply replace the entire carb for a new one. From Yamaha, this would cost nearly 300 bucks, but one of our members has recently come up with a perfectly viable alternative (if you are a bit creative with the rubber bits) - https://tw200forum.com/forum/performa...b-your-tw.html - and for a lot less

    But enough of this frivolity – without knowing what is actually wrong with the carb, this all becomes “theoretical”.

    Two suggestions

    Either go and visit your uncle and see exactly what’s going on (which is a good idea – see above) – or get your uncle to come on the forum and state his case

    Questions – too many

    Do you (personally) have any experience of the TW ? – the other questions can wait, or you’ll only be acting as a middle man in solving this – not a good idea

    Sorry to sound “difficult” over this, but realistically, we need a lot more info ….

    TW carb repair/tuning can be as easy as turning the air/fuel mixture screw to the setting that is correct for your bike (no parts or special tools - just a screwdriver and a bit of your time). Or it can be as hard as replacing the carb completely. Welcome and cheers.
