    I have a 2003 TW200 and when I first got it, it would start and run fine every time. I changed the battery out and used the Yuasa that is spec'd. It will start and idle but when I give it gas it dies. After a while of it dying and restarting I can give it throttle and get going. After riding for a few minutes it idles and acts fine. It has me puzzled. I cleaned the carb and the Pilot Jet was gunked up. I used some wire from a wire brush to poke through there. I didn't want to make too big of a hole. I cleaned the tank as it was nasty as well. I am wondering if after I cleaned the tank some trash some how has gotten back in there. Should I just go ahead and change out the pilot jet and if so, is there any other jets I need to address? Also, could it be the spark plug?

    Hello Jeremy,



    How many miles are on the bike? I have 6K on my '03. Lately, I've been experiencing extended cranking both cold and warm. I threw in a spark plug yesterday (one that I got for free from a fellow member on this forum) and now it starts immediately. My part throttle performance is noticeably better as well.

    DO you have a fuel filter installed? If not, do consider it. It is one of the BEST ways to prevent crap from getting into the carburator. I also filter my fuel before putting it into the tank, which may be overkill but it gives me peace-of-mind.

    As far as the spark plug is concerned, I use an NGK DR8E-IX Iridium plug...expensive, but well worth it!

    It sounds like the idle mixture is a bit lean. Try opening the pilot screw 1/4 turn. The cause could also be a small vacumn leak or a leaky/torn air filter and housing.

    On my old Honda I had a similar condition where it would start on one kick and idle like a champ but when I gave it gas it would cut out. The idle mix didn't seem to make much of a difference, got richer main jets the issue went away. Looking at a graph for that carb configuration it indicated that the main jet was the primary arbiter of mix immediately off idle and again as full throttle was approached. Not sure if this is the case for CV carbs as well, but it's probably worth checking out the condition of the main jet if idle adjustment doesn't do the trick.

    Thanks everyone for the replies, I think I will do like Marty said and try a new spark plug. But does anyone think it could be the Pilot Jet?

    Well for me it was the Spark Plug, put in a new one and the thing runs perfect. Before it took me forever to finally get it started but once it did it would run. After the bike cooled off it wouldn't start again without 10 minutes of trying to get it going. I assume that after the plug was heated up it was OK. I don't know if that makes sense but that it was I have concluded. Thank you all for your help. I really think I will get an inline fuel filter. Is there one that everyone uses?

    I would go through the carb and clean it. Last year I was having the same problems. What I found while cleaning it was a cover on the right side held on by 2 screws under the cover is a rubber diaphram. The part is called a coasting enricher that comes with a kit at about $25 the little ruber thing has a metal tab in the center where a pushrod in the carb pushes against it. I guess the set up stabilizes fuel pressure during off throttle or coasting times. I hope this helps I just bought 2 extra kits "Just In Case"
