Anyone else experienced this. Taken the gas cap off maybe 5 times before I noticed it was broken at the top. Curious if anyone else has seen this. Looking for a alum replacement now.

Clarke caps are famous for doing that.

Check my facts, but IIRC the thread pitch is the same as an XR600. The ultimate solution is an aftermarket billet aluminum cap available for those bikes.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Powdercoated '87 frame, extended swingarm, YZ fork legs, ATV tire, 14/55, XT350 tank, spliced quick-release seat, disc brake conversion, beeg headlight, beeger rack, Lizrdcooler, Lizrdventz and bunch of other stuff all covered in invisible ink.

It is pretty common. PE is quite susceptible to ESC so any overtightening becomes an issue. I think they had also produced a bunch of bad ones. I called them about it and they sent a new one to me free of charge. I has been fine for the last two years, but I have been very careful to not over tighten it.

I just noticed a crack on mine today. It's been off and on more times then I care to count.

I only use two fingers to put it on.

I had some reward points on Amazon so I ordered up a new one for free.

edit: will this work or is this for the old style tanks?

If you're bored and you own a soldering iron, you can 'weld' it back together. I've done this with 2 stroke oil tanks on my Suzuki bikes and have done it for a 5 gallon gas can I have. Seems to be holding for me. Looks kinda nasty obviously if you don't have any finesse... But no leaking til you get a new one.

good idea for the time being...I was wondering if I could just smear some silicone on there to fill the holes temporarily...just not sure if the vapors would allow the silicone to harden...I do have some rtv gasket seal that i could use as well...I guess I could try and duct tape the hell out of it but that wouldn't look to nice...I would call Clarke and tell them but I don't even want to bother with another plastic cap with the possibility of this happening again...I def want to get an aluminum one...just don't really want the shiny polished ones that Clarke offers

I had silicone on my carb boot to seal it and noticed that the gasoline was turning it yellow pretty quickly. It's still 'gas tight' but obviously not ideal

after reading the reviews i am pretty sure this cap will work for the new style clarke tanks...cheaper than clarke's aluminum cap...i guess the vent tube needs to be glued on/safety wired though cause it's prone to fall off...was going to buy through rocky mountain atv but the only color that was not out of stock was red and i wanted blue...but they were the same price anyway so no worries
