98' bike, old style carb, all stock except the plug where the fuel mixture screw is located as been drilled out....

Bike has been operating fine down here at sea level on cold days during our vacation....each ride i inspect my spark plug looking for that elusive "coffee with milk" brown color indicating a proper burn....it always appears lean!

I just keep adjusting the screw out and out....now over 4 turns out....still lean looking plug....

Is this normal? 5 turns out? Im getting some white smoke before she warms up, but no surging or bogging down....bike performs great, im just confused/curious....

    What gives?

I think you are talking about the pilot jet adjustment. This is only going to have much effect at, and just off, idle. and yes, normally 4 turns would be considered too much, go back to 2.5 or so. You need to look at the main jet first. Look at some of the pinned carburetor threads. The main jet size is the most important if you are doing WOT cuts and looking at the plug.

If it's running fine with good power and doesn't seem to be getting too hot at sea level (since it's cold), you are probably fine. Next time you have the plug out, look at the top of the piston at TDC with a bright light, if it's white, THEN you can worry.

If you turn it much more, it's going to fall out.

Follow Rocky's advice. Then if it's running good, leave it alone.
