Got a real nice used TW gas tank from a guy. Problem is there is a locked gas cap on it - no key. Anyone ever drill out the lock on a gas cap? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Drain fuel. Rinse. Fill with water before starting to drill (avoiding fire). Otherwise I've never done this before.

If your not comfy drilling, I would suggest taking the assembly to a locksmith. Maybe they can do something with it?

I also purchased a used tank with a locked cap on it. I took it to a lock smith. He picked the lock and made to keys for $50.

Supposedly Yamaha can issue a new key if you have the numbers.

Generally, if you drill out a lock the device that the lock cylinder fits into is wrecked- so you only gain access. If you have a Yamaha shop in your area, I'd take a trip by and try some of their "spare/old" keys. They weren't real fussy with making a lot of different keys for this type of bike. Good Luck. OM

On my 2006 the gas cap has a couple of screws on the 'underside'. Upon removing those, remove the plate exposing the 'locking bars'. The bars simple lift/fall out. without these bars in place it did not matter what you did with the key, the cap could always be turned for removal. Perhaps you have the same option. Well, I understand better now. This of course will not help you, but might be an option for those that have a cap that they want to disable. Good luck Gerry

    Take care my Friend.........

Thanks for posting that mrgiz. I don't see any reason for me to have a locking gas cap. It will be disabled.

For canadianshiver's problem, I agree that a trip to a dealer or a locksmith should fix your problem.

    Joe,

Yes, that was the XT tank. I installed it in the same manner as others have described, with my own touches of course. The extra fuel range is great. My TW is Fugly so the tank got a paint job to match.
