    Electric Starting Trouble

Hi everyone. I appreciate all of the great help I've gotten so far in getting my new to me "90 TW up to snuff. My current issue has been a problem since I bought the bike. It most often won't start using the electric starter function. I have a new battery and it seems to turn over OK, but rarely starts using this method. When I kick start it, it starts right up. Thankfully it's an older bike with the kick start option. Any ideas?

Lots of threads on here about starting problems. Could be anything from simple wiring to CDI problems. I recommend trying the quick, cheap, easy diagnostics before you spend much on replacing parts. It’s always a good idea to get battery output readings, even on a new battery.

Some on here have gotten better results from a quick tap on the starter vs long cranking cycles.

Yes, it turns over (seemingly quite fine), but doesn't start...most of the time. It will start, rarely, with the electric start but not most of the time. When I resort to the kick start it starts up usually on the first kick.

its hard to pin point without actually seeing& hearing the bike but a couple of things to try 1stchange the battery, might not have enough power to move the piston fast enough.
    check the compression.
turn the fuel tap off and run the bike until its out of gas, let it cool down for a bit then pour a small amount of gas in the plug hole, try starting it again, if it starts ok then its a carb setting, usually the mixture screw underneath. normally needs winding in or out 1/4 -1/2 a turn. its best to try it with a cold engine.

I wonder if it could be the "ignition circuit cut-off relay" not working properly during longer cranks which lowers voltage? My 99 has the same problem but its so random its hard to diagnose. I will see if I can get it to do it then bypass the relay to give me some direction.
