    Deja Vu Oil Change

    Did a bunch of stuff yesterday on the BW200. I've really only had two (2) days that I've been able to show it any attention and one of those was the night I brought it home.
    Second time I did a big cleaning and de-greasing. Of course after that you have to re-grease and lube everything. And changing the oil and filter... I might as well have been changing the oil and filter on the TW.

    1986 BW200ES. Wasn't 1987 the first year of the TW's (in the USA)?

    I don't know when the last time the oil was changed but it was very hard to get the oil drain plug off. Breaking one kinda ruins your day. The usual strainer behind the spring was almost completely gunked-up:

    Normally I would change this out, rubber not that great but didn't have another so just a good cleaning for now. Next change or perhaps the next owner will be advised:

    Not good. That sludge is sitting in a quart yogurt container. The BW200 takes 1.16 US qt. so oil was very low:

    I had to use a vice-grips to get the two JIS screws out. Someone had used a regular Philips on them and they were toast. They'll also have to be replaced.

    It's cleanable and reusable like the TW's but, it's certainly served it's duty and time for retirement, ring in the new:

    The BW takes 20-40 weight oil. I didn't see any at the Yammy dealer but put some 20-50 Motul in it. This product is "red" in color so I'll be interested in seeing if there are any leaks. After starting and riding up and down the block a few times, no leaks but ya never know. Still smokes but that may or may not resolve itself over time.

    I also adjusted and lubed the primary chain as one snails was on #2 the other side was on #4, who knows why or for how long but that might have has something to do with it riding "twitchy" on the street.

    Along the same lines I checked the gigantic tires to see what the tire pressure was. Came back with a reading of "0" (yeah ZERO) PSI on my gauge.
    Now with air in the tires the BW rides quite nice for the beast that it is compared to previous. Poor thing.

    Ah, you do. I forgot too. I may be just a foster-parent for a fellow-friend of ours. But it is so easy to get sucked into doing "one more thing" before you realize you've started yet another project.
    I want to grease all the zerks and drop the fuel that's in her. Maybe bring her down to PB next week to ride her on private property.

    Is it he same exact motor as the TW? I can't see any difference.

    The BW200 engine shares many parts with the TW200 engine with the following exceptions that I noted on mine:

    -A compression release feature tied in with the kickstarter and exhaust valve.
    -A different carb with single throttle cable.
    -No extended output shaft due to the use of a jackshaft.
    -I believe that the BW uses a 4 plate clutch while the TW has a 5 plate clutch.
    -You got the best year for BW200's because it has both the kicker and electric start!

    Thanks for the info TW-Brian. I'll take some pictures of them side-by-side.
    I can't recall if the TW (Trailway) was originally offered to the Japanese and Asian markets only before coming to the USA. But certainly just transplanting the BW200 engine was a huge cost savings for the Yammy engineers. Probably cheap to build and basically already on the assembly-lines.

    As far as the OO went Rocky... this guy was heavy into high-end dirt and dual sports. After I purchased and he helped me load on the carrier he showed me his and his sons collection of Yamaha's, Kawasaki's and a super nice Beta. Mostly off-road only but he live in an area where you can just cut to a trail off your backyard.
    I got the feeling he bought the BW200 as a lark and besides changing the clutch and a couple handlebar cables really didn't do much with it. Besides the pretty horrible state of the obvious simple things like the oil and chain (and no air in the tires???) this thing starts on the first kick and/or first push of the e-start. It's really trying and was begging for attention. Now it has some.

    Carb boot is different and "very" hard to find. I found a new old stock, took 4 years. took a year and a half to get a good used one.

    Glad this BW's carb boot is fine if it took you 4 years to find. Now I know why there was a BW200 parts bike for sale for $3000.00, Holy Frikken Crap!!!

    I need the chain/sprocket covers, especially the normal outside one we are used to seeing on regular normal motorcycles. Just waiting for the sprocket to grab my pants leg.
    There are two (2) on fleabay (one of each) right now. JJ, can you take a picture of the covers you have on your '86 for me, I'm not sure if the inner jackshaft chain gets a cover too. I love looking at this set-up (the Jackshaft) as I ride it around. Seems un-real?

    And this cover is not available on the BW parts diagram anymore but I am advised it is the same exact part (but a different part #) as the cover on any year TW:

    I have a lot of old iron and similar to even the '91 XR I just completed there is a sport in hunting down rare or unobtanion parts and even period correct accessories.
    You'd think the German relics I own would be the most expensive but now that the Japanese retro market has more than taken hold nothing surprises me,
    That's why for the most part no matter how old you buy a TW for example... you've always got a much better than fighting chance getting what you want used or not at a decent price. Is anything delisted other than they are not making the kick-starter kits as a kit anymore?
    I suppose the year-by-year body panels get rare.

    When I see a "Rainbow Warrior" or a "Black Widow", I get it now. Never knew anything about them until I owned a TW.
