I've been trying to set my timing but the manual I have and the marks on my crank are different. The manual says to line up the arrow with the "T" but my markings are "|----| |" so I don't know what to line up. I tried lining it up on the "I" but the crank always turns 1/8" past it.

Have you turned the crank a little each way past the marks you found? On mine the T is there and the marks you found as well. You do have to look closely to see the cross bar on the top of the T. Are you trying to do cam timing or ignition timing? You can pull the spark plug to avoid the crank turning past the mark. It's probably engine compression that's making it rotate past where you want it. It's also a good idea to use a socket on the flywheel bolt for precision in turning the crank.
    My handle is B-dub, I ride a T-dub, and drive a V-dub.

Yah there is definatly no "T" and I do have the spark plug pulled. I was using a socket and was just barely turning it and it would roll past the "I" EVERY TIME! It's so frustrating!

Pull the side cover off the head and look at the upper cam chain sprocket. It has a mark on it and it should be at 12:00 when the piston is at top dead center and both valves are closed. If the mark is at 6:00 your valve springs will cause the engine to turn slightly. With the mark at 12:00 (6:00 will work but it will move as you described) look in the little hole and see where the lower mark is pointing. It should be a line just to the left of the T but not as far left as the "H".

    What timing are you changing?
Long live the internal combustion engine!

okay so i had a buddy help me and since there was no "T" we lined it up with the "I" and apparently all i needed was an extra set of hands because he held it in place while i adjusted the timing sprocket and the bike runs fine.

thanks to all for the help.

EXCELLENT! Now ride the wheels off that thing.
Only a fool would attempt it, and God help me, I am that fool!
