I have what feels like a surging at part throttle, while cruising or during slight acceleration. From the forum descriptions, I think I do indeed have the lean surge. I have read qwerty's carb tuning post. I saw the part about adding washers to the needle to make the lean surge go away. Bike is 2013, with 115 miles on it, in north Florida. I have modified nothing.

Two questions. First, in qwerty's post it appears that he induces a lean surge, then fixes it with washers under the needle... Would that also be a good fix for a surge that is just happening on its own?

Secondly, my bike is of course still under warranty. Opinions on whether or not the dealer service dept will successfully fix my issue, or should I just tackle it myself?

Other than this surging, which I really hate, I am absolutely loving this bike. Here's my first milestone with it...

Since it is still under warranty I would start there. Have the dealer take a crack at it first. Should they not take care of it then have a go at it yourself.

If got a 2013 and mine did the same thing, I added about .050" of shim washers under the needle clip. It runs great now. Another thing I noticed is that an excessively loose chain will magnify the surge.

Thanks for the replies guys. The dealership was familiar with this condition, and said it was against the law for them to fix this. They said if I brought it to them for my first service they'd do it for me for free.

I think I'll be handling this myself.

They are just taking off the brass plug on the bottom of the carb and adjusting "richining up" the idle mixture screw. Thats what needs to be done and a shim sure wouldnt hurt either. You have to love the EPA nuts.

What part of North Fl. are you in? I had the same exact problem, plus some when I bought my 2013 in St. Augustine.

I ended up with 5 shims and a 130 main jet. I almost think I need to go to a 132.5 jet sometimes, but it certainly runs better.

I'm in Perry, about 50 miles or so southeast of Tallahassee.

I'd go with a larger main jet, shim(s) under the needle and turn out the pilot screw 2.5 turn's as stated above. The dealer know's they'd be commiting an EPA (felony) by do the work...do it yourseld,it's not hard to do at all....plus there are plenty of folks here (you have folks who want to give you parts!....WOW)to assist you!. Welcome.
