Hey there!
So I just picked up a 1990 the other day. I haven't had time to really go through it with a fine tooth comb but I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
There is something wrong with the electrical system which is causing power loss across the board and limiting the top speed at WOT to 55mph. Some backfiring/popping/misfiring occurs at WOT 55mph as well. The horn is barely audible, the battery is totally dead, and all the lights are dimmer than they should be and they flicker.
The problem is absolutely not the carburetor. I have three carbs in my possession now and the problem occurs with all of them, including the carb from my well running '87 (which easily reaches 75+mph).
The bike starts on the first kick and idles great. The valves are in spec, the cam chain tensioner is in spec as well, and I replaced both rubber boots that attach to the carburetor with brand new OEM ones. There is no airway obstruction and the air filter is new. The spark plug is new and properly gapped.
I'm assuming the problem is poor grounding or a faulty regulator/generator/resistor.
Anyone ever have to deal with this? Thanks in advance - as I continue to work on the bike I'll update this thread.
