    Duck Creek Village

we plan on exploring a new area on the way home from Moab in May. Has anyone experienced the Dixie National Forest in Utah, more to the point , the Duck Creek Village area? looks like 100's of forest service roads and lots of free camping areas so we thought it might be a good spot to stop at

    Pretty country for sure.

Might be still be snow bound after MOAB 2017 since elevations are mid-8,000 ft.
For example the Dixie N.F. Campground at Duck Creek is closed until May 12th, 2017.
I'ld give the Dixie National Forest a call for conditions. Maybe try their Duck Creek Village Visitors Center? Dixie National Forest - Duck Creek Visitor Center - US Forest Service
If you can't reach them, or if their advice seems government issue cautious then you might just call a local business. I have had good luck calling or e-mailing Chambers of Commerce, even realtors. Usually get helpful folks when you indicate you are planning a visit to their region.

Unfortunately, as Fred says, that will still be mostly snowbound until mid June. There are some areas around Price (out to Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry), there is some riding in Capitol Reef, lots in the San Rafael Swell area, then some in Admiral's backyard. There is also a side trip out to the Promontory Point Golden Spike Historical site if you are into railroad history, quite a few trails out there.

The Duck Creek Village Inn, owned and operated by John & Wendy Chapin (435 682 2565) at 815 East Highway 14, 84762) is a nice place to stay.
    Dinner is also available.
They close in September, but I do not know when they open.
    They winter in Panguitch.

    It is heavy snow country.
The back side of that pond is a nice hike.
Managed to cross the creek on a log without falling in.

If roads are open, Cdear Breaks and Mammoth Cave are recommended.

thanks for the info guys! unfortunately I never thought about snow in the south at that time of year. we'll drive through that way any how, just because we haven't been on that road before. if there is snow then we'll just head down into the desert. thanks for the areas you mention Rocky. we have been to most of them and will return, but we try and see something new each trip. the Promontory Point looks interesting as I do like steam power, but it is too close to Salt Lake City for my liking. we usually drive up to 500 miles to get around Salt Lake. but I think one of these trips we will be coming up your way, as I have never been on your road and that area looks interesting and we will be hitting Admirals back yard or maybe his sideyard
