    Ride Recommendations For Flagstaff, AZ

Hello Everyone. I am wondering if anyone has any specific trails/rides that they love and wouldn't mind sharing for flagstaff, AZ and its surrounding areas. Thanks

Combination dirt and highway or only dirt?
    How close to Flag?
How far do you like to ride?
    Camp overnight or day trip?

It has been 20 years since I lived there and Coconino Forest shut down a lot of single track, but some may be coming back.

There are interesting places to explore east of the road to Walnut Canyon.
Also, off Lake Mary Road on the south side of Walnut Canyon, such as FR 128

The ride down Lake Mary Road to Happy Jack to highway 87, through Strawberry and Pine to Payson is an enjoyable paved ride.
If you want to go on to Payson (highway 260) and even Alpine, you can go over 150 miles without leaving the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in the world.

Along the route are many forest roads

Hello sportsterdoc thanks for the help. Lord willing I will be moving to flagstaff sometime next year so I am excited to ride there. I am looking to stay around flagstaff. Going as far West as parks and as far East as Doney Park or the volcano. I don't mind riding on the road to get to the trails but trail riding is my favorite. I have been around the back side of the peaks by potato ranch and that is a majestic site to behold. I have been down through Payson, strawberry and pines and all of those places are beautiful. So any thoughts on trails around flagstaff would be appreciated. Have a good one.

From the Payson-Heber highway 260, you can explore dirt roads for 65 miles to Winslow, along Rim Road 300 on to Wallace Road 34/99.

You can double/triple/quadruple that distance on side roads

I lived in Flag from 93-97. My employment took me all over northern Arizona, about 50,000 miles a year. I found a lot of "shortcuts"!

At that time, the suggested route was all dirt, but usually navigable in a 2WD pickup...just one marginal section, that I recall.

Very much, although it has since become more crowded. We could walk from our house and go miles into the woods...but no shooting within city limits and the limits are far into the woods.

Never expected to leave, although home was too large to be practical for retirement. The air smells good, no need for home air conditioner at almost 7,000 feet elevation. Snow storms were not usually over 12 inches and melted in a few days.

For 3 of the years, I was out of the automation business and income was marginal.
Had bills from wedding for daughter #2, out of pocket for surgery for daughter #2 (husband had no insurance) and daughter #3 was planning on a wedding.
So, in 97, I went back to SoCal to work for the founder of the company I retired from, for the third time.

Intended to catch up on bills and go back, but by that time, eldest daughter moved from Prescott, youngest daughter moved from Cottonwood...both to Georgia.

We have a ranch (primitive, off grid) 60 miles west and youngest daughter, her husband and 3 kids just moved back from Georgia to Clarkdale, so we are in Arizona about once a month.

Too expensive where we used to live in Elk Run to move back.

It is funny because I am born and raised in San Diego CA. I am a simple man and just want to live in peace and enjoy hunting and riding in the outdoors and California is just pushing me out. My wife's family and my family are here in San Diego and we are blessed with good jobs but we are just tired of California. Flagstaff seems to be a great place for us since we are within an 8 hour drive to get back here to San Diego and it is nice and cool as compared to Phoenix. We are ready to pack and move just praying for jobs where we can either work remotely or have good jobs there. I work for the utility company SDG&E and my wife is a program manager. I really appreciate your insight. We love flagstaff and it is good to hear that you liked it too, minus the growing population.

Flagstaff jobs are mainly hotel, restaurant and government.
I worked industrial automation sales, out of my home, the first year (93) and then I thought I might have to chop firewood to feed my family!
Fortunately, I only had to finance $55K of a $177K home, which resold this year for $550K.

What did you do for SDG&E?

I worked for LA Dept of Water & Power from 70-79, mainly operating Sylmar Converter Station, the southern terminus of the Pacific Intertie.
