2019 New Years Ride Sat. Jan. 5, Brendan T. Byrne State Forest/NJ Pine Barrens

Geez, almost a month to the day since our "Grey Saturday Ride in the Pines" the weekend after Thanksgiving. Last 2-wheeler for me in the woods for 2018.

Well, it'll be 2019 in a few days and the off-road sidecar bunch are doing their annual New Years (or as close to it) ride so for me it'll be a 3-wheeler.
But 2-wheel and Dual Sports are welcome and invited so... here (below) is one of the organizers, Rich's posting over on the Soviet Steeds" website:

"Who's up for the first ride in the Pine Barrens of 2019?

    Where:
Pakim Pond parking lot off Coopers Rd. See link below for map:

    https://www.google.com/maps/place/Pa...!4d-74.5314976

    When:
    Saturday 01/05/19
Leave at 10:00am from the Pakim Pond parking area.
If you need to unload a bike or sort out your gear, get there earlier.

    What:
A day ride through Brendan Byrne State Park.
Lunch is your sandwich, snacks and drinks you bring with you on the trail.
There is a Wawa and gas station near Rt. 70 and 72, gas up and get grub before you arrive at Pakim Pond.
Bring food! It can get chilly at times and a good meal will help you stay warm.

    Riding:
All vehicles must be street legal. If your brother in-law wants to tag along on a dual sport bike that's OK; but he cannot bring his quad.
Our main activity is trail riding. This is great Uraling territory, flat and sandy, no rocks and some water crossings.
If you get stuck there will be enough of us around to push/pull you out.
1WD or 2WD will be fine and a willingness to push a stuck bike would be nice.
Knobby or 307 pusher helps, but not required. We've had a Retro with a street tire do the ride before.

A Ural/Dnepr is preferred but we've had two-wheelers along before.

This is a great opportunity for newer owners to get their feet wet (pun intended) off-roading. This area is very Ural friendly.
Trails are just wide enough to make it seem adventurous. The sand has just enough slip to make it fun and enough traction to get going (most of the time).
There's nothing too steep or scary off camber. If that sounds boring just pick up the speed a bit or skip the chicken bypasses and try to navigate a deep hole.

This is a "rain, snow or shine" ride, so dress appropriately.
Wear layers, including a windproof layer.
Nylon windbreakers and jogging pants in your layers will keep you warmer than thicker gear, as they stop the wind.
Monkeys should dress for snowmobiling, they are less active than riders and they can get cold in that metal tub.
Warm gloves, wool socks and waterproof boots go a long way in keeping riders and monkeys warm.
Spare layers, socks and gloves are a good idea if it is wet/extra cold.

Please come with most of a tank of gas, willingness to get your bike dirty, and pack a lunch, snacks and drinks, as we'll be in the woods for several hours.

    All skill levels/rigs welcome.
This area is generally very dry, little to no water on the trails and no water crossings.
Gas/food is available at the Wawa Rt. 70 and 72, Woodland Twp. about 2 miles away. Please gas up/get food before you arrive.

PM or post of you have questions.

    Hope to see you there!

    Pray for Snow!"

The Ural guys are riding Saturday, Jan. 5 only. Since it's such a long ride for me to get there (I'll be trailering, 110 miles) I was thinking about arriving late the day before or staying over the night after. So the 4th & 5th or the 5th & 6th. Try and get 2 days of riding in. Contacted the BTB Ranger Station to see if any of the cabins were available. Someone has reserved/rented all of them for the entire Winter.
But all 3 "dry shelters" are available. No running water but they do have a woodstove in them:

Looking specifically at Shelter #3 because it is the closest walk to the rest rooms. There really are no flush toilets in the Shelters according to the Ranger office.
You HAVE to take 2 days.

Here's a short video someone posted regarding the Shelters. They look pretty nice. Each is supposed to be for six (6) people.

Beautiful Sunny 56 degree weather for us today. Very odd. Nice riding.

After a short 20-25 mile local ride to no place in particular (a great place to visit BTW) I pre-loaded the Ural Patrol for Saturdays ride in The Pines.
No one's coming out with their little dual-sports? Supposed to be cold & wet... perfect conditions keeping everyone else away from the roads & trails.

It was an incredible day of riding. I met Luis (XT250) for a huge breakfast and then he followed me to the staging location. Later Scotty/Jersey Jeeper came by to visit but they both had other 2-wheel plans so left after more sidecars started showing up.

52 degrees and Sunny on Jan. 6 in New Jersey, unheard of... but it was.

Some tough water crossings because of the deluge of rain the day before but as always, riding The Pines and it's raw beauty is aways a challenging pleasure.

Lots of fun in the Sand Pit where everyone turned 8 years old again.

One of my best rides on 2 or 3 wheels. Enjoy:

I don't know how to do that yet. But I'll call you during the week and you can talk me onto the tarmac.
