    After reviewing frame by frame I see you lost the rear end on a man hole cover? Sewer/Water line access whichever. Was that wet or frosty or just too smooth for the tire to gain the required amount of purchase on? If I am correct whenever possible get the bike upright prior to hitting the obstacle/imperfection then compensate for the overshot corner when clear. Hope your injuries heal quickly and take care not to rush getting back in the saddle.

    Point is Nihil shows how an experienced rider reacts with intuitive responses to situations...no time to think or plan, instinctive self preservation and muscle memory take over sometimes with surprising success.

    I have the Forma Adventure boots, perhaps the most comfortable footwear I own. However they do not provide a level of protection much greater than work boots compared to crippling MX plastic clad boots.
    Thanks for the flattering words, but I'll tell you man, it sure as hell felt like amateur hour when I was picking myself and my bike up off the pavement. And you're right, there is zero time to think. The last bit of thinking I did there was when I'm approaching the corner you can see a bit of a wobble where I lock up the rear. Entirely normal, I do it almost every time right there in the same spot, but this time it rode out a bit longer and I remember thinking "I don't normally skid that far, I must be going faster than usual". But looking at the speedo in the video, I was well within my normal speed for that corner in a casual but spirited cruise. The bars went to full lock when it first started sliding out from under me and on the way back over. I think if the road has been consistently slippery or consistently grippy I'd have been able to recover or at least lay it down a bit more gracefully, but the wife and I drove back over, and there are strips of truck tire width slippery bands all over that corner. It probably didn't help that I was facing into the sun. Lots of hindsight though, hopefully I'll become a better rider for it.

    Yeah, the older I get, the better my gear tends to get. I enjoyed things more when I was 20 and indestructible.

    I was thinking about getting a matching boot for the other side. My 3yr old son keeps telling me how cool my robot foot is.

    It broke free before that cover. From the outside of the approach, my usual line to the apex runs just inside/to the right of the cover.

    Sorry to hear and watch this....like everyone else I wish you a speedy recovery.

    I think Dryden-Tdub might be correct it seems like the man hole cover may have been the culprit in this instance.

    It broke traction when that cover was about even with the front wheel. I've been over the video dozens and dozens of times trying to figure out what particular brand of stupid I was when it happened. You can infer an approximate location of the cover on the other side of the bike after it disappears behind the front wheel by following the crack in the road.

    Experience based opinion: Scrapes & bruises and even fractures are generally no real-biggie. The ego thing is totally normal!
    But that "mild concussion" is! "Mild" is a descriptive but often misleading term. There is really no such thing with a brain injury.
    I hope you have discussed this with your regular Doc. He may want to refer you to a specialist and/order some other tests. I'm no Doc but I do have real experience with this. Please do not ignore it!

    My worst ever crash was the result of a "1-second black out", a mini-stroke or something similar...they were never able to accurately pin-point it. I was riding my perfect condition, hopped-up BMW R1150R sport-touring bike. Full Ohliens suspension, fresh sport tires, advanced rider training, much experience on that bike.
    Full safety gear, Arai helmet. S. Carolina mountains, small group of highly experienced friends, riding in 2nd slot.
    I blacked out for the smallest moment and WHAM! Went straight off a left-hand sweeper, across a grassy area, slid down on the right side, stayed with the bike, hit a vertical boulder, right front on me & the bike. The speed limit was 55 and we were actually going only ~55...very unusual for that bunch! I was mostly conscious and knew I was hurt, no idea how bad.
    Care Flight chopper to a great trauma hospital ~80 miles away. They "lost" me on the way and had to paddle-shock me back.
    The Docs found 13 broken bones...10 ribs (right, left, front & back), 2 long bones in right arm, scapula. Right shoulder "torn up".
    And one other thing I paid little attention to: A "Mild" TBI...Traumatic Brain Injury.
    The bones are healed up fine, although 1 rib is laying across another. Limited reach in right arm, nerve damage in right arm & hand, shoulder messed up.

    And that little "mild" TBI...actually PTSD.
    Lost 10 points of IQ, several "right brain functions" became "left brain functions", a few left moved to the right.
    Diminished cognitive ability, vision, memory, depth perception, balance, walking, timing, mood, Left/Right & North/South/East/West; & clockwise/counter-clockwise confusion.
    Typing & spelling difficult. Used to be a writer. Now I just peck away on the internet.

    I could no longer ride big, fast bikes. So I didn't.
    Very difficult...riding, racing, restoring bikes has been my life since I was 14.
    I loved it, I was good at it, I missed it. Very much.

    I required several types of Docs & therapy.
    Still have to see a few Docs and take physical & neuro therapy

    Time passed and I just couldn't take not riding anymore.
    I was now in my 70s and was starting to just...shut down.
    So I repaired & sold the BMW..and bought a TeeDub!
    Best thing I've ever done.
    Every time I ride or work on that little guy, I feel like I did when I started riding 61 years ago.
    The world is brand new, it's all mine...and it has motorcycles in it!


    So, Nihil...it seems I have led you (way too far) down a rabbit trail, just to tell you this:
    You sound like a good, competent, skilled rider, I'd love to ride with you..
    Get back to it when you can, learn from this and be an ever better rider.
    And most of all...don't dismiss that "mild" concussion diagnosis and take extra good care of your noggin!

    Not to be a worry monger but Darth has a very good point about possible brain injury risks.
    Hopefully the simple "mild concussion" diagnosis was reached after a good evaluation.
    It is not unknown for a comma or worse to sneak up on someone after a similar experience after a week or so.

    On the lighter side there are always those Randy Mimola waltz moves.

    nihil wishing you a speedy and full recovery. Man I find it hard to watch your video knowing whats coming. I have become a little paranoid about wiping out over the last couple years and part of that is because I ride in jeans with a cheap Joe Rocket jacket. I feel confident my Bell full face helmet, Klim gloves and Sidi Adventure boots offer good protection but when I see pics/videos of people that wiped out a bike and left alot of skin and flesh on the road I know I need more. Planning to purchase Olympia Airglide pants and jacket along with a Helite air bag vest for next season. I don't like spending that kind of money on something I might never need but I know at that point when I realize I'm going down I would happily pay ten times the price.

    Sounds like you have well and truly been through the wringer my friend. To appease my better 3/4 I went and got checked out shortly after I made it home. They did the MRI/CT thing, and the ER folks said my noggin was in good shape. I did discover a nice new bruise about the diameter of a grapefruit on my inner thigh. I hope I'm still able to ride when I'm your age. Hell, at this rate I'll be happy if I can walk by the time I'm your age

    They took a bunch of pictures with some fancy expensive equipment, and I'm assuming they know what they're doing. No headaches, no blurry vision, nothing out of the ordinary so far. I was certainly there long enough. 16:00 to 22:00 or so, busy night as the patch-em-up. One of my regular youtube distractions is motorcycle videos where people make implausible recoveries. That guy knows how to dance.

    I went good on helmet (Shoei RF-1200), decent on jacket (Fly CoolPro), ok on gloves (Cortech DX2), and whatever I had laying around for pants and boots. This next round of gearing up is going to involve decent or better on all fronts. Like you say, hard to shell out when everything is fine, but after an event you'll wish you had paid the premium.
