New to me TW200, real clean 1995 with 712 miles. Kick starts fines with side open choke. At no choke it will idle but not for long. It dies out right as I give it full throttle. I can ease it to high rpm's. Link to video below. Looking for starting points at where to troubleshoot.

Thanks in advance.

Howdy. Simple first steps? Sounds like a fuel quality/quantity issue. Try fresh gas and a healthy dose of SeaFoam fuel additive which might clean out deposits from ethanol fuels and age in the carb. Run bike for half hour or so.
If no improvement you might wish to confirm fuel is getting to and into the carb by opening petcock and drain screw on left side of carb ( JIS fastener, not a Phillips#2!). This might be a good way to drain that old gas out anyways. A better way to drain the gas is to remove and upend the tank over a clean plastic bucket so you can inspect tank's contents and condition. Ethnol fuel and age can clog the nylon filters on the petcock's main and reserve intake filters. This, and a similar filter inside the carb on top of the float needle valve seat can be source of a inadequate fuel delivery rte to the carb.
However I think a general carb cleaning either via SeaFoam Lucas Deep Cleaner, etc, or disassembly and manual cleaning should solve the problem.
New spark plug never hurt either.;)

Hi Jayz,

Welcome to the forum. That's a nice looking Rainbow Warrior that you found, but unfortunately it clearly has a serious problem. Let me know where you live and I will be happy to take it off your hands. (Just kidding you ;), sounds like all it needs is good carb cleaning and adjustment. There are lots of threads on here about doing that.)

1. TWs are typically "cold blooded". So, let it warm-up for 2 or 3 minutes with the "choke" out, if necessary. Then, ride.

2. I agree with Fred. Probably poor quality gas after sitting so long. Dump out ALL the fuel. Replace it with a gallon of 87 octane (non-ethanol, if possible) TREATED with SeaFoam, Lucas Fuel System Cleaner, etc. This may NOT help. That's why only 1 gallon, for now.

3. If necessary, remove the gas tank and check the filter screens attached to the petcock. They are inside the tank. I have seen globs of jelled ethanol around them that is stopping gas flow.

4. Ethanol problems are worst in wet climates. It sucks in moisture until things gum up. If you can't find non-ethanol gas, ALWAYS add ethanol treatment when storing the bike. Many of us run SeaFoam or Startron all the time.

Wow, five bucks for 1/2 once? Come on Briggs & Straton, I want to buy American but you are not making it easy.
Thanks for the link, maybe I'll look for the larger container for better economy.

I took some pictures of the gas tank, how bad is this, scale of 1-10? Should I drain and try seafoam treatment still or is this bad enough where I should focus on cleaning the tank?

I couldn't find a JIS screwdriver anywhere in town, any idea of any type of stores that may carry them? How is it that parts departments at Yamaha dealers have no idea what they are?

Welcome. Yep your tank needs to be removed and cleaned plus your petcock. See threads on that. Also your carb will need cleaning most likely your pilot jet is blocked causing the no idle. You can buy a set of JIS screw drivers on Amazon for @$20. Also check the stock tool set the phillips looking one is a jis screw driver if you still have it.

And, to think it all started with a 1995 TW with only 712 miles on it. You will be a TW mechanic in no time!

Look up the thread on cleaning that tank with apple cider vinegar. THAT'S RIGHT VINEGAR!

Clean the tank and screens first. I would wait on the carb tear-down, unless you are ready for more pain. For now drain the float bowl. If you do this carefully and into a clean white cup you may see debris. If so, a rebuild is probably necessary. No crud? Maybe not.

Startron is expensive but at Home Depot, for instance, 16 oz (treats 96 gals) is $14.50. SeaFoam and Lucas are a little less.

If you get the carb and tank cleaned....

I found this fuel stabilizer to be very very good over the last few years..

https://www.walmart.com/ip/FUEL-TRE...0168&wl11=online&wl12=134172134&wl13=&veh=sem

its available from most lawn centers as well... i mostly get the larger size with the built in measuring cup and use it on anything that may get some storage time.

Removed gas tank and noticed petcock leaked when turned off, went to fill with AC Vinegar and turn upside down and gas cap leaked like crazy. The gas cap gasket is cracked all the way around so i'm working on a replacement. I just received a new petcock assembly and will install and fill with vinegar right side up. Should I apply anything the the gasket between the petcock and tank?

You may want to consider getting a Clarke tank - an extra gallon and it's plastic, so no more rust....ever. Procycle has them for $235. I got one and really like the look and the extra range it affords esp when out in the woods. Congrats, you are gonna love riding this little bike!

I'm with Donzo, with the rust in the tank, I think you will all was have problems. I would buy a sealing kit and redo the tank, I did 3 tanks this spring and seems to work. or pick up a clark tank. it is a big pain having to fill up the stock tank with fuel every time you use the bike and then worrying about running out of fuel on a 100 mile ride, or having to carry extra fuel to make it home. with the clark tank, I can ride off road all day and make it home on 1 tank full. and welcome to the forum

I like the look of the stock tank but the capacity of the Clarke. The sealer is cheaper but shouldn't be to much work on your tank. I used the Kreem tank liner. One car kit did 2 bikes. Definitely put an inline filter. My main jet was clogged causing it to die when giving it gas.

Do not seal it! Clean it. If the AC vinegar does not work try the tank cleaners at Home Despot, etc. The sealers can create a space between the rust and sealer that accumulates moisture and more rust.

The tank gasket is an interesting problem. Yamaha does not sell one. However a Kabota 12521-41340 is a perfect fit. It is for one of their generators, or something. All Kabota dealers have them. $4.00 or so. Oh, and remember, the tank cap has a vent in it. So, it will leak when upside-down.

I would tape it up. Cover the hole with a poly bag and duct tape it.
