On the TV show "Pawn Stars" last night they had a '60's trail bike "Trail Breaker" looked US made, had TWO WHEEL DRIVE, big tires, looked something like a TW200. Both wheels driven! Extra gas was stored in a gas tank built into the center of the front wheel!

History: http://www.rokonworld.com/history.html

They still make them: http://www.rokon.com/products/trailbrkr.htm

I bet the TW would give it a good run for the money, what do you think?

That'd be a Rokon. Still being built today. First bike to cross the Darian Gap.

I wish we could get them 'down-under'....

And you can get a plow or a cultivator or a lawnmower for them, plus a water pump, a generator and more!!

I would think a TW would do 85% of what it could do?

A member on this board has a Rokon. He posted about it a few months ago on the old site. It's a really neat bike, and looks like it can get to places even a Quad wouldn't be able to get to.

Many years ago a friend of mine had one. He kept the hubs empty so he could float it across deep water.Several times when we came across a deep water crossing he would just step off and wade beside the bike holding it upright. When he got to the other side he would smile and say " Lets see you do that with your SL-125"

Rokon is built for off trails only .TW will out run it and fly up trails but Rokon will win on the steep stuff. It is 2x2 and no foot controls so you can use your feet as stablilizers and nothing to hang up on the underside. So you could say that if you want.

This was at one of our meets.

We had a Big wheel ride with us at one meet and it had to be pushed up several places because it just spun the rear wheel.

I had a Rokon about 10 years ago. It was a neat bike but too slow to actually trail ride and very buzzy when you got up to speed. I looked into a 2 wheel drive Yamaha they where testing a few years back but it was about $7000 extra. I settled for the TW200. I think I made a good choice.

A Rokon is on my bucket list of 2-wheeled things I've not yet owned.

Expensive habit, in terms of tires, parts, etc.?

Rokon has made some interesting-way out there bikes over the years. I have a '75 bike catalog and there are at least 5 models listed. 2 are along what is already described above. But the other 3 are larger models and only 1 wheel drive. 1 is a motocrosser ,1 is dual sport and the last is an "advanced-concept trailer" whatever the heck that is.. All 3 have front and rear disk brakes while the dual sport has cast wheels. All 3 rated at 90 mph and have automatic transmissions. Interesting they had front and rear disks when street bikes were just starting to get front disks. I can try to scan the pics if any interest...

Here are a couple of pics of my 1969 Rokon Trailbreaker. They are neat little bikes and always draw a crowd when you show up on one. They will go anywhere you want to take them, but are agonizingly slow, noisy and not very practical unless you drag a lot of dead animals out of the deep woods (which is what they are designed to do).

I have 2 of these '74 RT340. It will leave anything on a rough trail. 340cc Sachs 2 stroke (pull start!) Automatic like a snomobile drive system, MAGNESIUM (not alluminum) wheels, Hurst Airheart F/R DISC brakes. WAY ahead of its time, won the '74 ISTD, (international six days trials) against all the Euro factory teams, THEN the Jap bikes came in and at 1/2 the price they couldn't sell them, went bankrupt and sold... but someone has always bought the rights to the 2wd trail breakers. Only bike made in USA in the early 70's, HD was owned by Italians then. Maybe one of the rarest bikes out there.

Both mine run and run well, a blast to ride. wheelies and I bet 90MPH is possible. More info if you want here:http://rokonron.50megs.com/history.htm

When did a Rokon cross the Darien Gap? What year? To my knowledge the first was Culberson on a BMW R80GS in the eighties.
He wrote a book about it called, "Obsessions die hard". I met him at the BMW national in 93 and bought a hard back copy from him.

How about the Tote Goat?
They are nothing compared with Rokon. Even the TW is more of a go anywhere bike.
My father had one and I used it my first "motorcycle".
