Hoot, Montezuma, and "The Judge", aka: Borneo: Took off in late July 2015 {where did those 5 years go?} and over a 9 day span we rode between 1500 and 1600 miles, including a Ferry Ride across Lake Michigan, through Lower Michigan, Northwoods Wisconsin, the "Yooper" {UP} of Michigan, south across the Mackinac Bridge and down through the lower portion of Michigan, back to the Judge's Ranch in Northeast Indiana....

First off Montezuma and Hoot had to get to the Ranch, about a 90 mile ride through the back roads and country setting of Western Ohio into NE Indiana....leaving on late Sunday morning...we took off at the bright and early hours around Noon...we
arrived at Borneo's about 3pm and his young nephew Harmon {Weasel's Brother} took Borneo's TW out on a test run...well Hell, that ended up in disaster. Harmon was injured but survived, and thanks to Weasel and Friends the TW, despiter some damage, was back in running order{although that would be problematic later in the trip} ...In the meantime we drank a few beers, did some major BSing and stayed the night in preparation of our Monday Morning get away...

Part #2...Great Lakes Ride 2015...

On Monday morning, not much worse for wear....we headed out from the Ranch outside Auburn, Indiana...heading first for Ludington, Michigan, where we would stay the night before loading up the TWs on the Badger Ferry Express to cross Lake Michigan. The Auburn to Ludington ride would be the longest ride of the trip, except for the last day when we decided to forgo a final rest stop and made the 300+ miles back to Borneo's Ranch...

Hoot was perfectly content to ride along at 45-50mph but Borneo insisted I pick up the pace, otherwise we would not make Ludington before nightfall...so off we went streaking past northern Indiana and southwest Michigan's streams, rivers, and small towns. The TWs were working perfectly and we made good time, found a motel not far from the loading site, then headed out to eat Mexican, which over our years riding together in 2015 and 2016, was a major theme...ride all day, eat Mexican for Supper and then, well at least Hoot would have a few beers. Nice Motel, good food, and a good night's sleep would prepare us for the "Badger" ride across Lake Michigan the next day...

Part #3 Crossing Lake Michigan...

Waking up early...we headed for the loading dock of the Badger Line, or as they call it, the US 10 extension {since 10 is located in both Michigan and Wisconsin}...the Ferry crosses from Ludington to Manitowoc, and depending on weather takes a few hours....on this late July day the weather was damn near perfect...70s, light wind, little wave action, and sunny...Hoot on occasion has gotten seasick on Lake Erie and the Gulf of Mexico, but this trip no motion sickness meds were needed and after we got the bikes loaded, it was smoothing sailing....

{Click on photo for full size version} ... {1} The TWs waiting to load on the Badger at Ludington...{2} Hoot, buzz cut and all, was enjoying the trip across, no sea sickness at all...{3} Entering the Harbor at Manitowoc...{4} the deck view of the Helm Housing of the SS Badger...

Riding Great Lakes part #4...the Wisconsin Northwoods...

After crossing the Lake {Michigan} we departed at Manitowoc, Wisconsin...rode some back country through south of Green Bay {De Pere} and made it to Shawano late in the afternoon....a Super 8 Motel, and another Mexican Meal were on the agenda....the next morning we headed north towards Wolf River, then the "Yooper" {Michigan's UP} were on the GPS...However once we passed and did some photos at the Wolf, the damage that had been done to Borneo's TW back in Indiana came back to haunt us...a bearing issue arose, and we cut across the Wisconsin/Upper Michigan Border and headed to Iron Mountain to do some repair work...

That part and the ride to Baraga is up next...

{1} Motel 8 near Shawano Wisconsin...{2} the Wolf River in the Northwoods in northern Shawano County...{3} Hoot at the Wolf...{4} Borneo and Montezuma relaxing at the Wolf...and the Bearing problem, no fault of the TW reared it's head as we neared crossing back into Michigan at the UP...that story up next in Part #5

Part #5 Iron Mountain Break Down...

Into Day 4 of the trip the damage that Borneo's TW received when Nephew Harmon laid it down While test riding it back at the ranch, came home to roost. After we left Shawano and the Wolf River region in the Wisconsin Northwoods, we headed for the UP of Michigan...about that time Borneo noticed a front wheel wobble ... we decided to nurse it to the nearest "Big" City...Iron Mountain. We stopped outside of town at a Farm Implement Store and the Judge and Montezuma got to work...Hoot? Well I stood around and watched... 🤪

A couple of hours later, repairs made, we headed up farther north towards out next stop, a small berg of Baraga...where we would do some serious craft beer drinking...🍕🍻 and Pizza eating...

Part #6 Off to Baraga ...

Leaving Iron Mountain after the front wheel repairs, we headed straight north to the little Lake City of Baraga...
an interesting little town of 2000, made up of a mixture of White (45%) Blacks (30%) and American Indians, around 22%...we would meet a friendly bar maid of Native American heritage at our Motel Bar. The trip up, despite it being late July was "Yooper" indeed...low 60s, cloudy, and damp, although we avoided the rain (as we did much of the trip} it didn't rain until after we had stopped for the night...Baraga is located on the western shore of Lake Superior at the L'Anse Bay...we stayed at the Country Inn for a great price of about $50 although the listed prices were well over $100. We got a great room and headed for the side bar off the main dining room...drinking beer was the plan, as we were 4 days in and had not touched much since back at the ranch...well Montezuma and Borneo hadn't...Hoot needs at least a beer or 3 most nights on these trips... 🍻 :devilish: So we settled in with our rather large Indian Maiden and enjoyed beer until we got hungry and ordered this huge Pizza...🍕 Montezuma by this time was in the "spirit" and sprung for the pizza and beers, plus a large tip for our barmaid...if you ask him I think the final bill was in the $200 range, Oh Well, can't take it with you...

All I remember was as we, after a good breakfast, headed off to Marquette the next morning...just a bit hung over :coffee:😵...the next day, the trip to Marquette was the shortest ride of the trip...parts on US 41 and 2 but much of it on the back gravel roads of the "Yooper" ...

{1} Borneo {2} Montezuma {3} The boys quaffing down a few, and trust me, Hoot had more than his share and {4} A really nice motel, especially for the price we paid...Baraga is a town I would like to visit again if I get the chance...{there is a Casino located there and that would be worth it in itself} ... 🤑

Great Lakes Ride 2015....Part #7 Baraga to Marquette, Michigan {in the UP}

A bit hung over we headed out early towards Marquette....

The route is anywhere from 55-75 miles depending on which route you take...for the most part we avoided US 41 {a route that I grew up on and beside in south Florida some 60 years previous}...and took some back roads zig zagging around the "Yooper" for several hours, filling out tanks and even stopping at a gas station for pre cooked Burritos and Coffee for lunch...Yum~Yum~:coffee:

The mostly gravel wooded roads were our first real "Off Road" riding of the trip...and while the scenery wasn't as spectacular as the Northwoods of Wisconsin, it was nice to get away from traffic as we made our way east to the small College town of Marquette. Arriving mid afternoon, we found a decent 2 1/2 star motel with pool, hot tub, and sauna. And Montezuma and I to a quick trip to a Wal Mart for supplies....as we neared Marquette Borneo and Montezuma stopped a local Cabela's {I think}...where "nick" decided to buy another leather jacket, thus adding to his collection and reducing his bank account. After settling in at the motel, we rode out and found a nice little Chinese Restaurant, a real one, not an Americanized fake type...a pleasant change from our usual Mexican fare, it was worth the time and side trip.

Photos of the Baraga to Marquette Run...The last one taken by Borneo Hoot and Montezuma riding towards him on a Yooper back gravel road...

Great Lakes Ride part #8...Superior Michigan Mackinaw

After a decent Real Chinese Meal...a good night's rest we jumped on the TWs took a quick tour of the Yuppie Collage Town of Marinette, and headed towards Lake Superior...got some shoreline shots and then we headed south towards the Mackinaw Bridge and our final legs down through the Lower and towards Borneo's NE Indiana Ranch...we had views of Superior, Michigan, and Huron, on this day alone...but the highlight was the famous Mackinaw Bridge...the huge expansion bridge that connects the Yooper from the Lower Michigan...and one that on windy days, much of the traffic is not allowed, ESPECIALLY Motor Cycles and High Profile Vehicles...however this day, like almost all the entire trip, was just about perfect, even for crossing the bridge.

While Montezuma and Borneo got on the paved part {right lane} Hoot and Ol' Blue got squeezed into the left...grated lane...and could not get back on pavement until we had finished about 90% of the bridge crossing...teeth rattling to say the least...but we made it, and would change from our original course and head south and east, rather than west, and finally hit some rain...not much rain, but enough to soak the riding gear...

1-3 photos...2 views of Lake Superior one featuring Ol Blue which only had 17 months and 4000 miles on it at the time...the other along the northern most shore of Lake Michigan...

The the famous Mackinaw Bridge and Hoot's Grates ...

Macinaw Bridge Newest view.jpg mackinac steel grating.jpg That was a few miles of hand numbing.... 😵 Hoot was more than ready for a stop and some beer, that would come later in the afternoon.

Heading South and for home...

After crossing the Mackinaw Bridge, we took a slight Southeast turn and tried to dodge some rain...we failed...we got wet, but it wasn't that bad...8 days and this was the first rain we came across and after stopping at a country fairgrounds to dry off, we pulled into the small town of Atlanta, Michigan...I had been here before while canoe riding down the Au Sable River...seemed like a good place to stop, grab a bite to eat, and spend the night...

We grab a bite at a local pub and grub...hit a local motel...and planned on taking 2 more days to get back to Borneo's Ranch...we were 360 miles north of his place...

Photos of the Huron side of Michigan, and
Montezuma getting about as close to a church as he will be... 🤪

The 360 Mile Finish...it had been 8 days since we left Borneo's Ranch in NE Indiana and we planned on taking our time and making a 2 day run back there, where Montezuma and I would spend one more night, then head back to West Central Ohio...well Hell the bug got us and once we got on the road...we ended up doing the entire 360 and made it back to outside Auburn before dark....a few stops along the way and some "state detours" and home we were. Montezuma and I stayed one more night, Borneo's wife had already purchased us some not so fast food...the beer was cold and we enjoyed our final night...Day #10 overall would see me and Montezuma get up early and do the 2 hour ride back home...1600 miles in a bit under 10 days...

Great Lakes Run Road to Lake Nowhere.jpg Great Lakes.gif Upper Great Lakes Adventure final.jpg

The 3 Amigos would do it again in late October...a shorter run to the Mountains of West Virginia for Halloween...I'll post that story and photos a bit later in the fall...

{1} Are we lost?...{2} The Great Lakes...{3} Montezuma, Borneo, and Hoot, at the end of 9 days and about 1600 miles....we done good!

All great photos. Cool artwork on the last picture. And the one "The last one taken by Borneo Hoot and Montezuma riding towards him on a Yooper back gravel road... " looks like an old color photo faded on Kodak paper from the early sixties.
