my 05 tw 200 has 8k miles and is only ridden on the street and i beat it pretty hard. i used to race supermoto for years and love to wheelie and slide this thing around... so i am definitely hammering the clutch.

i am starting to feel the clutch slipping.. especially at speed on the highway hitting large bumps or concrete expansion joints. the bike surges due to a slipping clutch. the chain has the proper sag and the clutch is adjusted and working properly from the lever to the lower case spring/rod.

question is .. before i open her up.. is it the clutch plates or is it a worn basket that would 'surge'? the clutch works fine at normal speeds/use. .. just under heavy load it seems to slip.

is the ebc plates/springs set any good? would a simple washer mod do the trick?

yeah yeah.. i know without taking it apart its a guessing game.. but i want to have all the parts and knowledge before i take my daily commuter off the grid.

thanks!!

If you're talking about a "surge" where your bike is trying to creep forward with the clutch in, it's most likely a worn basket. Small grooves develop in the basket and they prevent the plates from separating properly. You may need to get a new basket.

As far as the plates/springs go, from what I hear, the EBC kit with plates and springs is the way to go, if you're a wheelie cool dude, or if you tend to abuse the clutch alot.

"Better" plates will only hammer clutch baskets sooner for someone like you. So far as I know no better clutch baskets exist.

Buy extras.

Just sayin'.

I've seen poor results with anything from EBC with friction material. If you want an improved power capacity, switch to the TT-R 230 or XT 225 assembly because those have an extra disc and/or use the Barnett discs and springs with a new set of OEM steel discs.

found an new complete ebc kit try out for 30$ .. for future does the clutch basket assembly from a tt or xt bolt right up into a tw? any chance of part numbers?

the tw is a tank of a bike on the street (farm bike yes woods bike no). i really do beat the snot out of this thing. at speed dumping 5th to 2nd in a turn or redlining 3rd daily. constantly hammering gears. it is a fun bike that has great balance and is truly a reliable bike. amazing on gas. cheap on insurance and can be beat on and still keep going. just gas and oil and it will always start. only thing is all years should have kick start from factory. the tw is one of my top 10 favorite bikes.

Tdub has either a TT-R230 or XT225 clutch, can't remember which. I'm old and get CRS on a regular basis.
If memory serves, I had to use the right side engine cover to match the clutch. Everything bolted right on with no problem. Maybe I used the TW basket and 225 internals. Don't remember. I did use the Barnett discs and springs--I've had good life from them in the past. 31,000 miles on the frankenclutch and no problems, not even any adjustment except to take up a stretching cable once about 10,000 miles ago.
