Hi All,

A big thank you from me and a giant one fingered salute from my wife. I've been a lurking lurcher or lurching lurker for years and finally got off my duff and picked up a new, my new 2012. Nice and white, need to color it in with some dirt.

Not 30 minutes after getting home I ordered the DMO pegs, and have some how held off on the Cycle rack. Bitter bitter will power.

Hope to be of some help or at least not a huge PITA. Glad to fianlly part of such an, hmm, interesting group.

Just let me know when to drink the Kool Aid.

P.S. Pics to come when I remember some passwords and the bike looks better than the stock photos.

Yeah but no cup holder!! Omm advice well taken and applied. Quick question on the amount of oil that should come out of the top end "check" bolt. A little or a gusher. Oil filter is correct and there is mere weeping withe the bt hanging on by a thread or two.

Remove the bolt completely. It will take about 10-15 seconds after start, dribbling at first but quickly increasing....you can turn off the engine as soon as you see oil coming out. If there is a problem you won't see ANY oil come out, and should never run over 30 seconds if you don't.

Have a rag handy!

Yeah, the check bolt has confused me too. From what I've read, some say just loosen it and some say remove it. Also, would you start the motor and loosen it while the motor is running, or can you just loosen it before you start the motor? Does it really matter?

And to Gorrillabiter, welcome aboard. I too was like you. I kept googleing and googleing about what bike I should get for my intended uses, and all roads kept bringing me back to the TW!

Oh I definitely have oil to the top end (and the spark plug recess, most of the jug, some exhaust...). It was a nice arterial spurt.

Further paranoia abounds....Second oil change around 200 miles plenty of metal. Wondering if I should be seeing copper in the slag mix??

I am also seeing some clear goob, for lack of a better term in the strainer and waste oil.

Running fine, I just want to make sure it continues to do so.

On a better note DMO foot pegs, idle screw adjust and Jimbo shield are all in action.

Well, maybe it doesn't need all of ten seconds! I removed the bolt completely, but I ran the engine with one finger on the kill switch, it didn't take long. If you ALWAYS do oil changes yourself, and reuse the original filter indefinitely, you can leave the bolt in loose, since you now know exactly what you are looking for.

Yes, you will see lots of crap until about 1,000 miles. Don't worry unless you see REALLY big pieces!
Do another at 500 miles, then 1,000. After that I do it every 3,000 miles or 6 months, but I will remove and clean the filter at 1,500, since it is so easy. Take photos for your records until the filter stays reasonably clean.
