My comments about the low temperatures last week caused folks to ask about where we live

So I thought I would give a bit of background.

Although I was born in Saskatchewan I moved north of 60 in 1965 as a school teacher. I remained in the education field in the classroom until 1981 when I moved into Education Administration - in 1987 I moved from our school system and became the Dean at our local College

I have always been airplane crazy and from 1994 until 2010 I was a partner in a 172 and hangar here in Iqaluit. I loved flying and there is still a web site about our flying - do a search for Polar Pilots and you can find that.

I have been retired since 1999 but with our children and grand children here there is no thought of moving south.

I have been riding since 1960 and there has always been at least one motorcycle in the stable - secret has always been a tolerant wife so presently there are 7 bikes in the shop.

There you go - an explanation of my time in the arctic , why I use the hangle Polar Pilot and my riding

How about somemore stories about your background

Thanks Bert, all very interesting to know. Can I assume all your bikes have been of the 'mostly dirt' variety. Your locale seems isolated enough as to suggest there is not much pavement, and purchase options in general must be pretty limited. Are most substantial purchases (cars, bikes furniture) made through a broker and then delived by ship sometime after? Take care and stay warm. Gerry

We have a summer home in the south. That is where lots of the bikes are.

We drive a Suzuki Vitara- there is a dealership for them here.

Life here is just like in the south except more expensive. Most of our groceries are flown in. We get about 20 flights a week from Montreal,Ottawa and Edmonton.

There are only 25 communities in our territory and none of them are connected by road. Here in Iqaluit we have about 35 miles of roads - the streets are mostly paved to cut down on dust problems in the summer.

Our shipping season is basically 4 months long - and that is when our heavy and bulk stuff comesw in - lumber construction materials big trucks etc.

Most folks have some ind of power toboggan - I ride an Arctic Cat and have a Yamaha Bravo for the grandkids but Polaris is currently the most popular machine.

+1 qwerty, If I was going to tell my story it would be an eight part book series that would be more unbelievable than Harry Potter and the reason for that is because I ride a TW.
Well.... that and also because I have veto power over my cousins when it comes to selling a very valuable property that I refuse to sell since I like riding my TW on it.

Cousins suck. Especially my 2nd cousin once removed. She could suck the chrome off a trailer hitch ball. I, too, ride a TW. I know from where you come.

Always tough watching those close to you destroy their health with drink and drugs. Breaks my heart seeing a cousin of mine drink and smoke herself to a most likely early grave. I gave all that up and now the TW is my addiction.
